They are ace. I’ve wanted one for yonks but couldn’t quite justify the cost, but then bought one second hand for £20. Bargain.

I’ve got several weeks of reading on there already, but any recommendations for books?

    what genre?

    couple of sci-fi threads I have saved from the past..1 & 2 as that what I enjoy…

Agree – let us know the genre(s) and I’ll have a think

I also check out the Kindle Daily Deal every day. Sometimes the book on offer isn’t to my tastes but often something looks interesting enough to take a punt for 99p

If you like your science fiction consider subscribing to Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine. Well worth the entry price.

    Cheers

Dark Matter was the first Kindle book I bought. Really good scary tale.

I’ve recently enjoyed “The 100 year old man…” because it was 99p. Can’t go wrong at that price but it was a good read.

Failing that, anything by A.A. Gill

Genre. Good point. Not really a sci-fi man to be honest and crime books don’t float my boat. The trend of Scandinavian crime novels does little for me having tried a few. I prefer first person narratives and the odd dabble in some fantasy stuff for example His Dark Materials trilogy.

Might be easier to give some examples of stuff from my bookcase that has left an impression on me in the past since I’m not good on categorising them:

A Thousand Splendid Suns – Khaled Hosseini
    Birdsong – Sebastian Faulks
Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden
Into the Wild – Jon Krakauer
Between Extremes – Brian Keenan and John McCarthy
    Room – Emma Donaghue
We Need to Talk about Kevin – Lionel Shriver
    The Road – Cormac McCarthy
Bill Bryson’s earlier travel stuff (wasn’t a big fan of his “A Short History of…”
Touching the Void – Joe Simpson

Looking at that lot they’re mostly quite intense or emotional stories. What does that say about me??! 😆

    This.

Loads of ‘The Complete…..’ collections out there, for pennies.

The Conan Doyle one is good, you get all the Sherlock Holmes plus his other stuff.

The GK Chesterton one is good too.

Currently rereading HHGTTG for the umpteenth time, still funny, still relevant.

If you like historical fiction, take a look at the Philip Kerr “Berlin Noir” books and the Sam Eastman books.

The Bible. I don’t have the name of the author but it’s the “word of God” apparantly. A number of ghost-writers at play I think. It has two volumes, Old Testament and New Testament so not as good as Lord Of The Rings which has three books but still worth a look. If you have a troublesome gangleon, you can try some bible bashing to rid yourself of it…but then you might break your Kindle…so perhaps not.

Possibly, but I heard he’s a bit of a nobber in real life. In fact I heard it direct from his wife.

This is a really good fictional first person narrative. And it’s about cycling.
