  • Hubs. How loud are yours?

On a scale of one to ten, one being silent and ten being as loud as a Hope freehub, how loud are the hubs you are using?

My bikes are equipped with the following –

    Hope Pro 2 – 10
    XTR M900 – 2
    Easton XC2 – 1

I’ll be buying new wheels soon to replace the virtually silent Easton’s and I love their stealthiness. On the other hand I find the noise from the Hope’s to be a good thing too when approaching walkers etc, so I’m just looking for a few suggestions really….

So what have you got and how loud is it?

knackered and heavily pitted shimano deore m595..

It sounds like a jumbo jet with a failed engine making an emergency crash landing on the M25 at rush hour..

I should probably change it really…

If a hope pro 2 is a 10, Profile mini’s are a 13. They make a fekin racket on my bike.

    American classic 6
    Crossmax SLR 4
    Profile Mini off the chart
    Roval SL 4

not my vid but you get the idea.

Yes, the Pro 2 really is that quiet. Did a repair earlier on a friends bike which has a Pro2 hub & on hers its a high volume 10. So don’t know why mines so quiet tbh.

I’ve got a Rohloff with a handy twisty thing you mount on the bars which allows you to vary the volume – and it goes all the way up to 14.

    I’d give my pro 3 XC6 a 9, doesn’t seem quite as loud as mates pro 2’s.

DT 240s can be equally loud if they’re dry, but they’re still far less annoying than a Pro 2.

Yup. They’re absolutely silent. Dunno if they’ve changed in the last year or so. Mine are 2011s.

Pro2 Evo – 8 (went very quiet recently but 3 of 4 pawl springs had broken)
A mates Pro2 Evo rear hub is much louder.

Someone beat me to it, Alfine 8 – Zero 🙂

And I love the silence, I could never ever bear to have a buzzy noisy rear freewheel!

I have a pair of hope pro 2’s and a pair of pro 3’s. I would say that the 3’s are louder than the 2’s. Does this mean they go up to 11?

Packed my pro 2 with that blue grease stuff now about a 4
I hate being noisy whilst out on the bike

    DT240s = 2 (0 when packed with grease)

I used to completely pack my old hope XC’s with grease and they would go totally silent for a few rides – lovely! It’s more tricky with the DT’s as they’ll slip if there’s too much in there or it’s too thick.

Roadie – some Richey ones – 2 (nice and quiet these, I like them stealthy on the roadie)
Lefty – some shimano ones – 3 (these have been rebuilt but are still quiet, maybe they’re full of water already..)
29erSS – Hopes – 9 (they’re clean.greased well, but for some reason not as loud as mu whippetmates hubs)

hope pro II: loud, much too loud*.

shimano slx: purrs quietly like a happy cat.

(*sorry… as someone up there ^ says, they really like the silent running of their alfine, and… i think my aversion to the noise of a proII began when i got an alfine.)

    CrossMax – dunno, haven’t noticed*
    CrossTrails – about a 3.5

*but I bet your Hope’s will be easier to get replaced!

Pro II and Pro II Evo are both loud, the Evo is a smidge louder I think.

Perfect for commutes, as freewheeling lets everyone within a fifty yard radius know that you’re there.

    ProII SS is loud.
Rohloff sounds rubbish (but isn’t) due to the 3 freewheels – different tone for each gear.
    Alfine is quiet.
And i can’t remember what the DMR Revolver sounds like, its been too long….

My hubs are pretty silent, but I make up for it in other ways. 😛
