Gotta say I'm a little concerned by all the pictures/video/etc of dogs being run in hot weather.

Its all about knowing your hound and winding back your ride, when I am out with Monty having the fella with you is a joy, but I do rest him a lot and take food as well as stopping for water a lot.

Well, strato, we'd checked the weather and it had said 20 degrees so we took the dog. When we got there, it was 27, and yes, we were concerned, and looked at the map to decide if there were enough watering points and deep rivers to keep said dog cool. There were.
The call was to stop whenever there was water for the dog, or whenever there was shade. Our water went into the dog before it went into us.
We also took about twice as long on the ride as we normally would, going at dog pace rather than bike pace.
We would never ever risk harming the dog by pushing it too far on such a hot day.Posted 2 years ago # -
Keep them watered and there fine it's amazing how far off they can smell/hear water mine would shoot off in a random direction to grab a drink or have a swim in pools I never knew where there.

You really need to find somewhere like a stream or pond that your dog can cool his/her paws in - they really do suffer with overheating paws

I should also add she was whining that we were resting for too long. And she kept jumping on us as we recovered.

Mine came out with us over the Peaks last Sunday, 20 degrees and thunderstorms were forcast, but it got really hot with not a drop of rain. We took it real easy for the dog, and I was quite prepared to cut my ride short if necessary and tootle back to the car. If anyone has a dog that is not used to running with a bike they should build the dog up slowly over several months 'training'. I carry a collapsable bowl and used it on sunday to cover the dog with water from streams. Dogs will run until they have a heart attack, so a close eye is needed.Posted 2 years ago # -
Its not really very hot...my border collies can run for a good couple of hours in 40+ degree.

Mine knows how to cool down. I walk her where there's a river she jumps in and out of.
And I don't take her biking in this heat, that'd be silly.

I work on 20 degrees as a rule of thumb, any hotter I'll head to the shelter of a forest or a shorter ride with lots of water about.

I completely avoid anything but first light/last thing with Bingo. He's a willing-to-please dog and thats the problem with most dogs.

Always make sure he is ahead of the bike and not behind/alongside. Reason? If hes ahead hes setting the pace NOT you.
