My new XTR disc brakes arrived today, opened the packing to find some wires that are in the instructions as needing to go between the bolts that mount the calipers to the bike. 
Looks like the wires are sposed to wrap around the two mounting bolts, I can't say I've ever noticed anyone else's brakes having this wire.
Do I need to use this wire?!
I did it when I first got them but it is difficult to getting tight enough to ensure that doesnt stop the bolts from slipping. You are better of with the plastic caps but if you do it tight enough they are unlikely to come undone.
I think they are supposed to stop any chance of the bolts coming loose. I've never used them and not had an issue, they can't do any harm if you've got them tho.
Throw them in the spares box!
I just use a dab of Loctite instead.
Never used the wires either.
Belts and braces tbh no harm in fitting them if you can be bothered.
To use the lockwire properly you need lockwire pliers. You can do it with a normal set of pliers, but it never looks very neat and it's difficult to get the wire tight.
We used to spend hours lockwiring all the bolts on our Superbikes, which is why my XTR brakes are secured with loctite and there is no lockwire in evidence (despite the fact I actually have lockwire pliers)
