As per the title really, thinking about getting a trailer to drag by 20month old about in, probably something like the halfords single seater job. Do I need a helemt for him aswell?.
Don't want to start a helmet debat here. I wear one so coming from the stanpoint that they work do you still need one for a child in a trailer?

We tried helmets on both our kids, but they were uncomfortable at that age. The helmet was pushing back on their heads/necks. We ended up putting their car seat in the trailer.
I have found that it pushed my daughters head forward in the halfords trailer; it's ok when she's looking around etc, but she generally falls asleep after about half hour, and with the helmet on she just keeps waking and can't get comfy. The trailer instructions recommend they should wear one, but generally now I don't bother; she is strapped in and we are only generally on sustran type cycle trails

Do a search its been discussed before. However we found getting a helmet to fit very difficult, getting it adjusted properly without screaming even harder, and when we did use it it forced the head forward. So most of the time we didn't bother. For most sensible riding with a trailer I find it difficult to see how a helmet is going to help protect the child anyway.
You need to make your own mind up though, and be comfortable with the fact that random people will be looking down their nose at you as though you were a child killer.

Not a trailer, but if you look closely, you will see that the seat is set back at head level to accommodate the helmet. If your trailer can't do that then I'd give the helmet a miss. In fact, given the roll cage and straps, I'd probably not bother. We used the above seat before moving to a kiddyback tandem.
If you're using the straps in a trailer properly, then there's nothing they can hit their head on. I've never put a helmet on my kids in the trailer, and they've been fine even when I rolled the trailer. There's a reason for that 5 point harness and metal roll cage. Any mention of putting a helmet on in the trailer instructions is just the septics covering themselves.
yeah from this feedback I'll get the trailer first try it out and the helmet decision can come later.
I only used helmets when I had two in the trailer to avoid heads bashing. With one it seemed to create more problems
However I would never run the trailer without the cover on for fear of throwing dog shit in their faces
