I have a Fitness First weekend pass at £20 a month. I can go from 1630 Friday to close of business Sunday. Can't get there in the week so a weekend only pass suits me

I work at the local leisure centre and I can confirm that the January warriors are all over the place!!! Just go anyway they'll soon drop out by mid Feb

HAving been a member of several gyms over the years, I spent the money on a good bench, some heavy weights etc and do 45 mins - 1 hour every day without fail. Saves having to be in the same room as the gym freaks who groan a lot, drop weights and don't wipe machines down.

Ditto, although sessions can be as quick as 30 mins. I do 3 to 5 days a week of meat head weights including legs. Cycling including XC races sorts the cardio. I've the body of Adonis underneath my baggy clothing.

Your local council leisure centre will be much improved over the last few years. That is what I use now for geographical reasons, and after the initial mump about equipment, you learn to make the best of what there is.

Agree with Duckman, i use the council gym in Darlington - pay as you go, which is great as i spend half my life sat on oil rigs, and its well equipped to boot.

Edinburgh Uni Pleasance gym is very good an reasonably priced. Didn't notice any January warriors yet but there are limited places anyway. I paid £95 for the whole year so can't complain really. My mate who's not a student is paying £24/month. There's always people there but I never had to wait longer than couple of minutes for a bench or weights if it's really busy. I avoid lunch time or evenings as it can be packed but any other time there is plenty of space.
I used to go to Virgin Active and it did look nice, but it was smaller than the Uni one and not as much weights or benches. Plus it did cost £41 off peak membership a month.

I've been to more gyms that I can remember since the late 80s from such places as Esporta and Virgin to local hardcore basement gyms. I don't go these days as am more bothered about getting lean and cycling fit than upper body strength however my local leisure centre looks pretty good for about £40/month (Surrey) plus they have a decent pool unlike many private gyms.

i use virgin active and its £49 a month. it is really really busy at the moment with everyone still in the new years resolution phase. due to the ice and snow, i've had to use it a bit more than normal, running on the treadmill last week was like the treadmill rat race
not one spare CV machine to be had...utterly horrible. it was so bad, that i was pleased! to be out road riding in the sleet on saturday!

Joined my local council gym in December to keep in shape over Christmas. In temporary premises so £13 per month
with no time restrictions. Perfectly adequate for jogger and weights

So back to my original question
Thinking of returning to my local gym, are they still full of January warriors or has the snow stopped them even bothering?
I gather there are no January warriors.

this should sort that out CFH

My gym is full of the January lot.
I think it works out quite nicely, every year January comes around and the gym fills up with fatties for a month so I have to get outside and run my way to proper actual fitness, then Feb - Apr on the weights has me looking good for May when the sun comes out.
Sorted

Virgin gyms are pretty good IMHO. Depending on where you are they have spinning bikes, swimming pool and steam/sauna- perfect to call in after a long ride! Off to mine again tonight- member since about 2004.

I can only go after work, bout 7. might join for a month see if i can get back into it, feel so unmotivated its horrible. I enjoy racing the clock on the treadmill.

I am lucky enough to get staff membership at my uni gym, only £15/month with other added bonuses,
1st circuits class tonight after 6 months off. I am sure I wont be able to move tomorrow. Bit worried about my knwee too which has been giving me a bit of grief

I recently tried Esporta 5 day free pass: http://www.esporta.com/free5daypass.aspx and it was just brilliant I am seriously considering signing up for a membership. Try it folks and let me know what do you think about that?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I have to say having been a member of virtually every gym out there.
Esporta was by far and away the biggest rip off and provided the worst service.
Terrible cleanliness, poor maintenance of equipment. Can't really think of anything to recommend it. Ummm, it was good for hanging with the 'in' set because of the extorniate fees. Thank god my membership was subsidised.

Stoner - I thought I'd help her out with an honest review. It really is that bad.

Why would someone resurrect a thread from 9 months ago with their 1st post?
I am very suspicious...
Posted 1 year ago # -
Perhaps that's her ^ and she just wants every-one to see the picture again (mind you, it was seared onto my retina the first time round...)
Posted 1 year ago # -
Hell...she's even managed to add a couple of tags as well...not bad for a newbie!
