You could do a lot worse than check out Phil's on St Matthew's Street in the town centre. The store itself isn't massive but Phil's pretty passionate about bikes (sponsors the local club, involved with grass roots racing etc.) and the service is great.

I've used the Colchester shop often, having bought three bikes from them in the past and have ridden with a few of the staff.
Good bunch of guys.

+1 for Phils.

I can't say I have been very impressed with the Ipswich branch of cycle revolution for various reasons, but can certainly recommend Phils - dead helpful.

Personally I'd recommend Lifecycle UK in Bildeston, not a fan of Cycle Rev.

Agreed - Lifecycle UK in Bildeston have lots of top kit and are v knowledgable, and mostly friendly(Matt++, Rob-). Agree also re Phil's being helpful and that Cycle Revolution sadly have been unfailingly unfriendly. Forget the Bicycle Doctor (he's a quack) but for good old fashioned skill, knowledge and charm (in an utterly non-cool and trendy setting) try David at Bosmere Cycles in Needham Market. Lovely guy and such modest prices.

Depends what yer pal wants really.
Elmys are good for Road and CX. Sponsor to Ipswich Bike club
Cycle Revolution: Dealer for many of the big brands. Possibly might explain responses above.
Phils: Smaller shop, Kona and Scott dealer. Has willingly helped me many times with difficult but not very profitable problems so respect for that.
Life Cycles: Not used it but never heard anything bad about them
