Flying in from NZ and getting in quite late, can't be bothered dealing with driving straight after flight so planning to have a night v near to airport, not fussed on luxuries but a decent hotel and easy to get to. I vaguely remember driving out of Geneva airport being fckn confusing - after a 30hr flight we don't need that ! Picking up a Eurolease car somewhere (French side i think - can check if it makes a difference).
Any sage advice from the STW collective ?
get a transfer bus to the ibis? just round the corner from the airport.
don't worry, Geneva always seems closed when ever I've been there, if you're lucky you may find a tiny newsagents that's almost closed but they won't be very helpful. oh and be careful, they ALL have automatic weapons.

yes it depends where you're getting the car..i'd be tempted to do what mrmo says then in the morning when refreshed do the same in reverse to pick the hire car up?
but thats just me..
The drive out isnt too tricky, does depend where you're heading of course! From the airport there are direct links to either France or The autoroute to Lausanne for example..
Its a royal PITAss doing anything on the French side of the airport, especially car hire, you will pay more Swiss side but its a hell of a lot easier.
is it geneva airport that has the bingly bing loudspeaker announcment tone that goes " how much is that..." (doggy in the window)?

If you want cheap and chearful, we stayed a night at a backpackers Hostel in the city. It was clean and pleasant. You catch a shuttle train (every 10 mins) to Geneva main train station, it's a 10 min walk from there.

Plus, I've hired cars on the French side and never had a problem. The only issue I can recall was that it was a bit of a walk and then you had to pass thru a passport check. Other than that, it's the same as hiring a car anywhere else.

I'm just in the door after a week in the Alps flying into and out of Geneva. We didn't stayin the city so I can't make any recommendations on that front but the car hire and drive south experience was very straightforward. There is a shuttle bus from the car hire desks to the pick-up car park then you are pretty much straight onto the main road to the autoroutes south to Annecy or east to Chamonix.
Where you heading to?
cars on the french side may not have a swiss autoroute toll sticker so you'll have to avoid swiss motorways or pay for one about €40 ??
getting from swiss to french side is a hassle with baggage
thought the ibis tip good - car hire co might even deliver to hotel in morning if asked nicely
I hate that airport it's the pits.
I think you only get charged for the motorway toll if you cross the border on a Motorway.

Thanks for replies - its a Eurolease car (as we're there for 6 weeks - works out at $40nz a day for a brand new car) so dunno where the car 'hire' place is - still waiting on paperwork. We might just do the Ibis thing and then in reverse next day, just from expereince last year of same flight and then M4 heading to Henley i was broken and thats on the right side of the right in the language i speak - not fancying a complicated drive after a long flight. Will shunt car pickup to the next morning and do that I think.
