OK, had an aborted attempt a few years ago and haven't been back since. What's the best route to do these 2, anyone got a map?

Anti-clockwise, DEFINITELY!
The obvious loop from Kentmere, over Green Quarter and up to Haweswater.
Can be nicely combined with a loop northwards over the Garburn Pass

cheers. Monday is looking good!

Lots of carrying,I prefer to park at the end of Haweswater,Big carry up Nan bield towards Kentmere resevoir,Superb singletrack decent to join the Bridleway alongside road to Kentmere village.
Climb up Kentmere park towards Winderemere (via High Borrans farm I think its called)keep right to Dubbs resevoir joining the Bridleway over Garburn pass(all rideable)from here you have two options via Stile end,or green quarter, via cocklaw fell,From Sadgill head north over Gatesgarth pass and an exellent swtchback decent via Gatesgarth pass to Haweswater.
Have an awesome ride
Nan bield decent

The descent between Gatescarth and the 'portage' up to Nan Bield....

Of course, it'll be pissing down with rain when you do it

GaVgAs - have you got a gpx of the route by any chance?

The best ride I've ever done in England.
Fabulous.

I will have a look mr_mills

cant do gpx as the lisence key has expired. If you have Memory map. I could email it to you if you show your email ad in profile.

When I did it I parked at Sadgill and went over Gatescarth then Nan Bield..stunning ride & the carry up Nan Bield is easy enough.
Do need to pick a nice day for it though as the scenery is excellent.
Will hopefully fit it in again this year and do Garburn as well, start from Staveley.
Think the route is on the Flattyres website.

I was lucky enough to be involved in the making of the mtbcut vid,Until you have experienced the climb up Nan bield you cant really appreciate how well these guys were riding on the day.
A cracking vid from Stu Thompson http://mtbcut.tv/(MTBCUT)

Danny fixing one of the half dozen or so punctures on the day.

You have email mr_mills,Loweys route is good too.

Please don't take the bridlepath north of skeggles water as you will be up to your hubs in mud. Either ride to kentmere via HP wood or long houses descents and then then take the Sadgill BP or take the bridlepath south of skeggles water over to longsleddale. Personally I would do HP wood and then Sadgill two awesome descents with easy climbs.

Evening, did this ride in the summer, hope you are fit as there is a lot of hard biking and the carry up Nan Bield is a gruller, to me its bag it once tick off list and commit to memory, have fun though.

If you mail me I can mail you back a map or mmo, whichever is best.

Cheers one and all. Not adverse to carrying so no dramas there, roystonsmith I've mailed you. I watched the MTBCut vid, it certainly whets the appetite!

Follow the "very hard route" in the link below:
http://www.singletrackworld.com/trailguide/uk/north-west/the-south-lake-district/Allow a LONG time for that one although you can miss out Garburn if you want and just park at Kentmere instead, that cuts the time by about 1.5 - 2hrs.

Smuttiesmith, which one is HP Wood? Got a grid ref?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Ah, just found it, cheers.

Cracking ride - do it anti clockwise and take some lagging for you top tube for the carry. Well worth it.
Last weekend:
Gatesgarth
Nan Bield carry
Worth it
And you have to do Garburn

459 016 on the map as HP Plantation. Hope you have a good time.

Best route for me would be up Garburn then across onto the summit of High Street on the cheeky trails, drop down onto the descent to Haweswater, up Gaatesgarth then at the high point bear north west up the obvious trail to drop you down onto Nan Bield descent. A big techy day out but well worth the effort. Not all on footpaths though

Sanny, that sounds a cracker....
Well the weather was fantastic, the route is an absolute MUST DO, I can't believe I've not done it before, it has to have the best descents in England, got a few cracking pics (must sort a flickr account or something so I can post on here!), cheers for all your adviceHarry

Booo! Did it twice last year, loweys route with the man himself and friends, then a few weeks later I showed a mate round, skipped green quarter, we parked at kentmere, it was such a nice day that after NB we did garburn too. Really good day out. Been meaning to go back this year but had other (possibly better) routes to try.Posted 1 year ago # -

Stunning pics there. The one of the bike against the watery backdrop is an absolute belter!
Sanny
PS Do try my alternative route. It's pretty tech but a genuine cracker!
Posted 1 year ago # -
You were dead lucky with the weather mate.
Sanny, nice route but the descent to Small water would be well beyond my level of riding.
