Guy I used to work with put a great map version onto my etrex HCX garmin, then the wife broke it and the replacement unit obviously doesn't have the maps installed and I have no idea how or where he got them from-any pointers out there?

there is a load of open source mapping in the link below, some of it is mtb specific as well
If you had Garmin mapping then you'll either need to buy it or 'acquire it' elsewhere

hmmm, just wondering where I could 'acquire' it....

...if your Garmin has a micro sd card then give the OSM stuff a go. TalkyToaster is quite good. Download the appropriate file and then put the GMAPSUPP.img file into the Garmin folder on your sd card and job should be a good'un.
Otherwise Garmin street mapping is called City Navigator and the OS style stuff is called TOPO I think.

yeah, I think i had the TOPO before, not OS detail but pretty good, most BW/fpaths, terrain and data was included as well as road names, canals, rivers etc.... I will try it tonight-ta!
