not sure if this has been done yet, had a quick look but couldnt find anything, the following was atattched to an email from southern xc

Bike thefts information
If you live near Farnorough and have had your bike stolen within the past year, your luck may be about to change. We've been asked to pass the following on:
I am investigating a series of mountain bike thefts from around the Farnborough area, which has resulted in us arresting three people and recovering approx 60 frames. I am now in the process of identifying them. Many have been reported to Hampshire Police, and these are currently being identified by their lawful owners.

There are some very nice carbon frames which may not have been reported to us or may have been reported to another police force as we are close to the border with Surrey Police and Thames Valley Police.

From what we have recovered the value of the original complete bikes is currently estimated to be at least £90,000. Of which I think I have approx £50,000 unidentified.

What was happening the bikes were being stolen, stripped and the components sold on, making things difficult, however the frames were not and I am now in the process of trying to identify the owners.

Could people please contact me if they have had a bike stolen from within 30 miles of Farnborough valued over £600 (MTB, Hybrid, Racer) since October last year? If that is the case, I'd appreciate if they could email me with crime reference number, make, model, colour and frame number and anything distinguishable about the frame.

Just to give you a sample of the frames, I have: a Giant trance X and Giant trance X1, a Scott Scale 35, a Scott Genius, a Scott spark 40, a Trek EX9 and EX9.5 a Scott G-zero and a black and gold S-works, all of which I know are someone's pride and joy.

(Mr MC posting)

nice spot, I'll email him and stick the results through Thames valley's systems tonight. Give me something interesting/productive to do on a night shift.

Definately think it needs bumping as there are quite a lot of coppers on here. I would also suggest that it could be forces from further a field, if the gang were that organised who's not to say they were travelling. Were's Deluded when you need him?

Good work PC Smith.

Munqe-chick. Noted, I'll contact Hants and see if any of the bikes are on the off-chance outstanding from A&S Constb.

So what happens to the frames that aren't claimed by their owners? How long before they are sold (if they are)? How wuold you feel about buying a frame from the police knowing it was someones pride and joy that was stolen?

If the police have tried their best to return the frame to it's rightful owner and failed for whatever reason (rightful owner has new bike on insurance, is not found/contactable, has no proof of previous ownership etc) then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

Police auctions are sometimes pretty good for picking up good kit at knockdown prices (not just bikes, they often sell off "proceeds of crime", you can get hold of all sorts from TVs to cars).

Great idea! I sadly had to use the E-mail address today, because my beloved 1995 KONA AA was stolen yesterday.. I built her from the ground up, and she was my new love... :*(
