Speaking to a 30 year old today I mentioned Burt Lancaster, they put on a blank expression & said "who?"
I said "Have you heard of John Wayne?"
They said "kind of, he was a cowboy wasn't he?"
They had no idea who Kirk Douglas was either.

FFS I could not believe what I was hearing, am I getting that old?

Nope, I'd say you were speaking to someone who's been locked in a box their entire life. I'm 34 and could real off no end of film and quotes from those guys.

I was playing a video of what is probably one of the best known guitar solos ever in the world, and my son, who's 19, said "who's that?"

    It was Edward Van Halen

Where I live, at the top exit from the village on the main road there's a sign that reads:

    Burton 2
    Lancaster 10

I've always wanted to nip out at night with a can of white spray paint and remove the "on 2" and "10"

Just wait till your kids ask you if you remember the war. Yes they don't mean Gulf War I or Vietnam of Korea they mean WWII! I must look really old.

I remember my daughter (who was about 18 at the time), asking me, in all seriousness, whether 'that bloke on top of the column in London' was Nelson Mandela. I think I told her it was, and worryingly, she probably still believes it.

    ELDRIDGE….

    Go on. Do it.
If I were a driver on that road and passed that sign after your 'work was done' I'd laugh myself into the nearest lay-by and stay there until recovery was complete. Then I'd salute your boldness and drive off.
I might even go back and take a picture to show my friends.
    Do it. Please.

On the flipside, you know you're getting old when the kids are going on about something you know nothing about! I'm only 31 and some of the younger folk in work were going on about "Gavin & Stacey" and it also appears to all over the place in magazines and on the radio.

I truly had no idea what it was and had to go and find out 😳

The real world? You mean like in the movies?

Perhaps the person you were talking to was not particularly interested in film and as such haven't heard of those people.

I come across many very educated and knowledgeable people everyday who have not heard of musicians, artists, writers etc who I think are well known. You know about what you come across and if you aren't that interested in film or tv then you won't know much about older actors (or new ones for that matter).

Not really to do with age.

Just put the phone down to an editor of a reasonably large circulation magazine.
She had called because in the article I had written for her I had used the phrase "as flexible as Olga Korbut" she had googled it and was asking if she thought it would be useful to put an explanation of who Olga Korbut was in brackets!!

There was a bit on Round Britain Quiz last week (and on Feedback) where the contestants were stumped trying to think of a pub landlord called "Al somebody" – and they're supposedly edjucated.
