Hi, looking to buy an s works and having had a wake up call have upped budget from original.

Views from those far more experience than I on worth of this machine on eBay? Slightly subjective I appreciate, but a “I wouldn’t pay more than” value would be greatly appreciated and taken on board.

Personally I wouldn’t pay more than about £1200 for it. They were great bikes at the time, but the later ones with the in-line shock were much stiffer. When pushed hard the off-set shock could sort of “bind” as well.

I had a 2003 Epic Marathon, a 2005 S-Works Epic and currently have a 2009 Epic Marathon. Loved them all, but the 2009 is a BIG step forward over the 2005/6 models.

Oh and it is an Epic, not Enduro as per your thread header, but I guess you know that!

Many thanks, just the kind of opinion I needed. I am limited by budget though so have to consider £1300 to be my wallet bursting max; so I guess I would have to suffer the older style rear shock.

I’ve actually spotted a Kona Hei Hei Supreme which has turned my head; and although the spec is a bit ‘low’ by comparison to others, would you mind providing your view?

Sorry; I mean Epic – I’ve had Specialised overload for the last week. It was easier back in my day (many years ago) when it was from memory: Hardrock, Rockhopper and Stumpjumper. Or as my work colleague said the oher day as he looked over my shoulder at my laptop..”Stumpee Jumpee?”

That Epic is a 2007, ironically, despite looking just like the 06 hardtail (I had both)! For your reference the 06 Epics had Fox shocks.

Personally I had 2007, 08, and 09 S-Works Epics and liked the 2007 one best! Was the most reliable too. Looks like its in good nick. But it’s now getting beyond your max budget anyway!

Not to make it a ‘what short travel xc/trail bike’ thread, but there are a lot of more modern designs out there for up to £1300.

Anthem X5 is sub £1000, Canyon have options at £1300. And that means new drive train and shocks with nothing lurking that might need attention straight away.

Regarding being a specialized; to be fair, and blinked, yes. I grew up as a child in Devon with a Specialized/Trek dealer being the only shop to pour over.

That has stuck with me.

I realise that I don’t have the funds to afford what is a top end s works, but what would suffice is a decent s works, at a price that I haven’t been stiched for.

These is a stumpy s works at the moment and after soome engagement with the seller; am at an understanding he would probably take £1400 cash.

Again, bleeding you all of your knowledge, but is this a good buy, or something which is just an average price.

For £1400 that is a bargain!

One thing though might be the fork. It’s a fork which locks out automatically (you probably know all this but humour me!), this makes it have very poor small bump sensitivity, but also very efficient.

I had the 100mm version on my 09 Epic and I loved it, however a friend of mine had it on his Stumpy in 120mm form and hated it. He gave it to me and I put it on my Epic to effectively turn it in to a “Evo” and I love it – so efficient and yet it reacts immediately when it needs to. Just be aware it is a love/hate kind of thing. If you get it feel free to mail me about set up – they can be a bit sensitive.

But the rest of the bike is great and for £1400 you can’t really go wrong.

I didn’t persue the stumpy; shame as it went for over £1800 – lesson learned there!

I haven’t bought one yet, but am scouring here/ebay/gumtree(;-/) every day; very helpful though about forks – it’s a crash course in bringing myself up to speed on current tech!

There is a local epic for sale; have exchange a few e-mails with the seller and he seems totally sound; he’s looking for £1450, but room for negotiation…

I’m a bit stuck with the kit that’s supplied though and therefore what a fair price is.

Any views appreciated and what I should be looking for when viewing (any tell-tale signs of expense around the corner etc..)
