all to do with high altitude clouds preceding high pressure systems, or something like that…

High-altitude clouds usually precede a warm front – i.e. a low pressure system, meaning sh*te weather in about 12hrs time.

Red sky at night indicates clear skies to the West where the sun sets. With prevailing westerly winds this usually means good weather the next day.

Unfortunately the rain came from the East.

When the 'normal' west to east journey of weather systems prevails this usually indicates high pressure to the west at sunset. Therefore should be dry for a while as it moves over the UK.

Today, Saturday the cloudy weather/possible rain was trundling in from the north east. Did it rain today?

Looks good for a while though.
    :))
