  • Design Engineers, suggest me a training course please

OK, so i've been given the green light / funding for some training through the Dole office but I have no idea what to do.

I'm a degree qualified Design Engineer whos leant more towards design & drafting of late. I've got qualifications and oodles of experience in 2D & 3D CAD, I've got a decent CV, pretty much run 2 drawing offices, set up error reduction processes and all the things that go along with it plus worked on some pretty high profile projects.

Yet after all that, i'm still struggling to find a job because the construction market where i've specialised has all but dried up and non construction areas seem to be just as bad and have people who know more of that side queuing up for jobs.

I figured the best thing was to fill out my weak spots but i'm not too sure where they are.

    any suggestions please?

What direction do you want to go in ?
    Management?
    Project engineering?
    Mechanical engineering?
    Civil
    etc

Project management seems to have a buzz round it at the moment but I'm mainly just after something that makes me more employable

The whole renewables sector is quite popular at the moment, i am an electrical engineer with CAD skills and project management experience and there's not alot going but we are forever enquiring and being sent specifications for PV systems, rainwater harvesting, green roofs, wind turbines, ground source……and on and on. Breeam assessing is also very big in the construction industry so maybe these are areas worth a punt??

I did a course in Hydraulics which has made me pretty marketable. There seems to be a decent amount of jobs going in Manufacturing at the moment, perhaps a shift?

If i'm going to relocate i'm going to do it properly and finish the NZ paperwork I got last week but thanks for the link.

what kind of manufacturing? i'm not a fan of stepping out of the office for too long though have spent more time than most in my line of work on the shop floor.

FEA competence would be a very good additional string to your bow if you don't already have it.

Smallpaiece Trust in Leamington do a 2-day Project Management course thats ok.
CFD / Ansys etc, always good to have.
FMEA seems fairly common if you dont currently do it, think Smallpeice do that also.

FEA is something i've looked into and its on my short list

Smallpaiece Trust seems to be aimed at youths. I don't think I pass for one of them any more

    Sometimes worth looking at
    http://www.jobsite.co.uk/
    for inspiration
just leave the location box empty and see what comes up for various key words.

that doesn't really tell me what holes I need to be filling with training though does it? that just tells me there are jobs nowhere near me.

don't! the more PM you do the less actually stuff you will be involved with and your soul will suffer..

things to look at FEA and CFD – CFD is becoming useful for lots fo things – not just aerospace and motorsport, but built environment modelling etc

there are jobs nowhere near me.

    podge! – you're in sheffield – right?

fancy a job with the University? – the AMRC department is often keen to hear from CAD-ists and the like, and the new (massive) Nuclear-AMRC* that's being built will need filling with Engineers…

(*don't worry, there'll be no glow-in-the-dark stuff, just lots of lovely Manufacturing research)

If you wanna go down the FE/CFD training route, have a chat with NAFEMS – you'll get generic advice/training, rather than costly/specfic training from the code suppliers which may not ultimately fit with the code used by the business you end up in. The flip side is that A. Company may be specifically looking for experience in ABAQUS/Ansys/Nastran/Fluent/StarCD/…..the list goes on…..

"that doesn't really tell me what holes I need to be filling with training though does it? "

    You might have a point.
But have you put the name of your home town (Sheffield?) in the keyword box?
What options have you considered to broaden or complement your skills?
Have you considered the health and safety professional route, NEBOSH general cert or diploma? Always work there and your background is as good as any. Just having the word construction on your CV is going to get noticed when applying for safety manager / officer jobs.

If you are sure that there are holes?

ahwiles – yes, being at the Uni would be good though I would be working for the enemy being a Hallam boy my self. is that who you work for? do you have any contacts that might be of use? Email in profile.

bristolbiker – generic / non too specific would be good, I don't want to get too specialised or limited. I'll google NAFEMS and see what's what

jobsite seems not to work in my browser. press search and nothing happens.

What options have you considered to broaden or complement your skills?

Training mainly as little else is available.

Have you considered the health and safety professional route, NEBOSH general cert or diploma?

H&S really isn't my bag, its the area my mum works in and its just never seemed interesting / worth it to me.

If you are sure that there are holes?

Well, there seems to be some reason that vacancies are being filled but i'm not getting anything.
