However, we're also doing some mince pies to use up a jar of mince left over from last year, before we do the proper ones in a few weeks.

We did 7, yes 7. We've been cooking for the festive holibobs since late Oct and continue for this week when all our "foraging" will be used up.
Bumper harvest here on the coast, our puddings have been steeped in Brandy and the cakes, well, we've been lucky this year to have some rather nice pudding wine to go in them.
I like your thinking, deep and rustic, has to taste amazing.
Hope you all get to play "fanny cradock" and do stuff towards your families festive period..
