Where/what is the best stuff to get for degreasing chains and the like? used to Finishline Ecotech, which works well, but at the rate I seem to need to clean my chain will cost a fortune.

    Any top advice?

Diesel is about £1.40 a litre currently which is about 15 x cheaper than the stuff you have been using. It cleans very quickly with little effort and leaves a nice thin oily film on your chain.

white spirit, 4 quid for 2 litres. Equally pongy as diesel though.

2nd the halfords stuff with a decent chain scrubber – lasts for ages and is bio-degradable.

Also the kids won’t come a cropper on the patio when you’ve finished as it won’t be slippery like an hgv with a dodgy fuel cap’s driven across it.

1 part citrus degreaser to 5 parts muc off, & pint of water or so, make sure you use gloves as the chemical reaction can get very hot 🙂

degreases in less than 2 minutes 😉

Just take your chain off put it in an ice cream container (carte d’or type size) and about 1 cm depth of diesel. No spillage or problems.

I also just brush a small amount on to the casette and mech’s brings them up a treat. Then wash the bike down after.

I always advise people not to fully derease their chains as doing so removes all the lube from within the rollers and that will have to be replaced somehow. Not easy.
If you want a clean looking chain wipe it down with a rag lightly wetted with white spirit or similar and then use a good quality chain lube that dirt doesn’t stick to.

Please name such a quality product. Am currently using Finish Line wet lube – goes on a treat, but attracts filth 🙂

Prolink is a very low-residue lube and is also very quick/easy to apply.
