Your opinions please.
Mothers 51 plate Focus Ghia 1.6 wouldnt start, popped round there and cranked it for ages, bit of a smell of petrol and eventuall after about 1 min it caught, seem ok since.
Shed got the car out of her garage the day before, parked it up, then moved it on the driveway and left it overnight.
Any thioughts as to why it refused to go? Damp somewhere?
Checked the plugs and they're nice and clean. The oil was on the min of the dipstick (topped up now), but nothing else untoward noticed.
Im baffled!

Flooded. It's what used to happen a lot more in the old days when cars had manual chokes.

Flooded. Start it and drive for 15 minutes. Rev hard once warm.

If it was flooded I wouldnt have started it though.
Mother originally tried and couldnt get it to go and it was sat for over a day before I tried and got it going.
The smell of petrol was from me cranking it over so long bfore it started.Posted 4 months ago # -
I'd have thought flooding.
My old Fiesta did this a few times and the first time it happened I was advised (against my better judgement) to try starting it with my foot flat on the throttle. It worked within seconds. Can't remember the explanation now as to what that achieves, but it made sense at the time.

If you've discovered that you have wet spark plugs (rare on fuel-injected engines), you may not need to remove them to dry them out. Injected engines almost always have a Clear Flood mode: Depress the throttle to the floor, and then crank the engine. That happened to my sister in laws car on boxing day. My mother in law moved it literally a couple of foot on christmas eve. I put it down to flooding too but I would have thought that with all the electrics in modern cars they wouldn't flood, this is a 06ish Clio.

Not convinced by flooding as any fuel on the plugs I imagine would have evaporated in 24 hours.
Like I said I'd been cranking the engine for nearly a minute before I got the smell, which I put down to unburnt fuel from trying to start the engine, which then started a bit choppily (due to partial flooding at a guess).
Still doesnt explain why it wouldn't go in the first place, normally it starts within a second or so.Posted 4 months ago #
