What’s wrong with my Walnut tree? The leaves are turning black. They look as if they have been burnt but no fire was near this tree.

    It doesn’t look like that.
Could it be frost damage? We have very cold nights and bloody hot days at the minute.

A swift google images look suggests it’s likely (IANATP)

Do brown patches or spots develop first or does the whole leaf turn black in one go? I am not an expert but if no patches/spots then it could be frost (particularly as the leaves are young/emergent). Lots of potential pests and diseases though 🙁

No patches or spots. The leaves seem to wilt then go black.

We’re getting a lot of winter damage this year, I think the combination of mild spells and hard colds is messing up the trees’ cycles a bit, I’ve seen a lot of early flowering and budding and the like then total carnage in the next cold snap. It ain’t easy being green.

+1 weather, if you’ve had any late/cold blasts.

There was ice on the car windscreen this morning and now its 22 degrees. That’s probably it.
