I don’t know anything about stars but 5 minutes ago I noticed a star that seems alot brighter than the rest. If look up at 30 degrees in a westerly direction you will see the star.

So does anybody know what this star is? And is it always that bright?

It’s either Jupiter or venus

Venus. Well below it now is Jupiter (not as bright).

On BBC4 at 10pm there is an Horizon program about Mars.

And apparently Pluto is not a planet any more.

Pluto’s status as a planet was always disputed. It was postulated that it was actually an escaped moon of Neptune. Also trivia buffs, Venus’ brightness has long been the source of many misreported UFO sightings. It’s brightness is due in part to its proximity to the Earth, but mostly the thick, dense cloud that shrouds the entire planet and reflects a lot of light, making it shine brighter than anything else in the night sky save the Moon
