Is this a good place to randomly wander looking for food?

yeah, why not?
As long as you like curry restaurants

Loads of places to eat and, as you probably know, mostly Indian food. You'll get pestered by the guys trying to get you into their place. If nothing takes your fancy on the main stretch there are (or used to be) some other places in some side streets or you can head up towards Liverpool Street via Spitalfields which has loads of (mostly chain) restaurants.

Or bagels

Ooh.. I like being pestered, it's funny
That street in Manchester used to be like that, the one we went in the door guy signalled to the kitchen and a waiter brought out poppadoms as soon as we came in the door and arrived at our table at the same time we did.. brill

In Brick lane, aim a bit higher than just free poppadoms. Definetly a "buyers market".

Salt beef on rye bread with all the trimmins

Used to be good on a weekend for finding your stolen bike!
Not sure if its like that now, haven't been in a while.Posted 3 months ago # -
Luck of the draw,..The only curry I've refused to pay for was at brick lane,
loads of other people say it's great,
they weren't happy though.........Posted 3 months ago # -
I wouldn't personally, quality very patchy and many of the places lack atmnosphere. I'd just pick somewhere off the internet or ask for a recommendation here.

tourist curry is always shit.
i'm sure you'll find better elsewhere

another vote for a salt beef bagel - you'll know the one to go to, it has a rather large queue most of the time

This place used to be very good and is not far from Brick Lane;
When we used to go there it was also a dry curry house, not even byo

I would go for the lahore kebab a bit further south.

I only thougt of it cos it was on the way. Went to a place called Chillies. The menu was just a typical cheapo curry place although the food was pretty tasty. Would've been much better if they'd put more imagination into it. Tuesday's at Mint Leaf East on City Rd was better.

As mentioned above, The Lahore is very good. Walk past all the tourist places right to the end of Brick Lane. Its not a long walk and the food is great and cheap!
At the other end of Brick Lane is the Beigel shop is legendary.
On the other side of Bethnal Green Rd there is Leila's and the Boundry Cafe.Posted 3 months ago # -
beigel bake

Beigel Bake. Truely one of the greatest places in the world.
Salt Beef especially. More beef in the bagel than you can fit in a cow!
And all the world's weirdest people are there at 3am on a Friday and Saturday night.
A wonderfully unique experience.Posted 3 months ago #
