    Hi all,

I have got a biking bothy trip planned for end of this march in the welsh hills – 5 bodies in a sizeable hut – we are trying to work out how much coal we will need to carry in between us – prob just for heating rather than cooking as we will have 2 plus stoves… its a full on 2 day trip and carrying kit – any magic ratios – was thinking of a kilo each / maybe less / more depending on fitness !

    any suggestions?

We took in 20 pieces each last time.

You won’t need a lot. 20 pieces sounds ok to me Flatfish.

You could save the hassle and just warm up using the stoves, I’ve done it before, it works fine in a closed room like a bothy. No, it wont kill you… 🙄

Enjoy, I love that kind of thing, could you post some photos later please?

Would ultralight coal be coke, or just air?:D

    Apparently proper coal.
I know I carried something like anthracite and it weighed, unscientifically, about twice as much.

a drop of coal and a saw to make use of local wood works for me.

To be fair to Tiger he brought half of Afon Arban into the bothy for us to marvel over. 😀

Some bothies are devoid of locallly available firewood. Some however have local sawmills prepared to drop off as much wood scrap as you might like. And then some more! Yippee, I love helpful folk.

Depends how long you are going to sit up getting wasted 😉

I’m sure some forumite will be along shortly with a spreadsheet but I’d be taking a hell of a lot more than 5kg for 2 nights.
