UK towns and cities should become more like the Colombian capital of Bogota, at least in their transport policies

Every Sunday and public holiday, over 120km of streets are closed to motor vehicles from 7am to 2pm and are used for walking, skating and cycling.

How cool would that be in London? Close the congestion zone to motorised traffic every Sunday! 🙂

Saw a nice film about this at the Edinburgh Bicycle Film Festival last year. Looks a great idea, but cannae see it catching on here (sadly).

That would be a great idea.

The council are talking (again) about doing it on a few major roads in Bristol on Sundays through the summer.

It would be a great idea… but the car lobby is currently holding sway, saying closing 4 roads each Sunday would lead to traffic chaos (they are all easily diverted routes) and, anyway, cyclists have loads of ‘…dedicated facitilites…’ already

    Why only Sundays?

There’s b*gger all point in driving into any major city at any time during the day (apart from picking up bulky items, which I’m sure an exception could be made for).

What a great idea. People here would go bloody mental about it ‘infringing their rights’ or something though.

Think they’ve done it in a borough on NY too.

Stoner, the roads in front of the Palace are rather nice on a Sunday, as my dear neighbour closes them to traffic. OK, plenty of tourists as well, but rather nice to have a closed road there. Would indeed be good to close off a bit more of it, perhaps Whitehall, Horse Guards, Rotten Row could be added
