Fendred - you can also get a few 'real' lagers if you look around. Tastier than Carling and all that fizz. Harviestoun do a one called Schiehallion which is good for starters. Ill post more names when I can remember them matey.

Fenred, Adnams do a beer called Spindrift, made to help with the conversion, it bring you over to the darkside with you hardly even noticing
Good luck. As for the OP - Supermarkets do seem to be doing a great job of getting a good selection of ales in, the tesco's set is just growing and growing these days while the crap lager section is slowly reducing.
For a serious sampling session looking into some local beer festivals.

I once found a 'real lager' in a pub, called "I Can't Believe It's Not Bitter," which amused me no end.

Currently supping an Innes and Gunn rum cask bottled ale. Was introduced to the delights of this by a certain tazzymtb - cheers, Taz!
It's luuuurvely, just enough rum background in it. Spot on for a winter's evening. Fortunately it only comes in 330ml bottles as it's 7.4%
very much a supping ale!

Majestic are good for mixed cases from the likes of Bath Ales or Wychwood (who have a nice Blond ale for the ladies).
