Jamie sweety, I'm not off in my statement it's real world functionality not just the numbers quoted on the box you need to consider love.

Apple MacBook Air

Yep - not in XP. Windows 7 is honestly in a different league to XP.
Cool. Hope my employer upgrades some time before the heat death of the Universe

@William.
The Macbook Pro is/was considered robust enough for many work environments, including your own apparently. So if the MBA is, and not just on paper, more powerful than the 2010 MBP, then it is a bit 'off' to say it is a little toy.

Macbook air has no ethernet
Have wireless-N, never use my laptops on wet string
tiny screen
As I spend a lot of the time I'll be using it in the back of a Qantas plane, this is its main selling point
paltry drive
256GB is fine for s/w and immediate files I need, and 1TB usb disks cost about $100 if I need more portable space
and If I remember correctly only one USB port no firewire...
I had a firewire scanner once..... And I think that's about it! The 2 USB ports should be fine for my purposes.
Ok so it's got number and the Solid State Drive means it'll boot in seconds but the overall usability and upgrade potential suck.
Why would the usability suck? And apart from throwing in extra TB blocks in my desktop, I never seem to get round to upgrading any PC before it's absolutely obsolete anyway.
Zokes. Read the links just above to see Master William is a bit off in his statement.
Sorry - seem to have got involved in a stupid argument on my own thread this time. Looks like I have no need to worry then, just need to get it, then re-learn how to use a computer for a week or two....

Did someone just call my Jimmers "sweety"? Eh?

Scratch her eyes out DD!

In fairness though, isn't the Air built around being ultra-light, thin and not having loads of bumpf to weigh them down? Seems a bit churlish and just looking for any excuse to slag it off because of the stuff it doesn't have, because it's not supposed to in the first place.

So I bought about the fastest laptop available 18 months ago-ish (MacBook Pro pre i5/7) and yes, the new Air would beat it in many areas.
But the new air is also slow because there's a faster MacBook Pro out now?!!!
it's nuts
also, how many usbs do people need?

Ah, looks like I can't use it on the plane after all
From the spec sheet:
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
Maximum storage altitude: 15,000 feetHmmmm
Posted 10 months ago # -
Won't the altitude figures be based on air pressure? On a plane you should be fine.

Hmmmmif you're wing walking / browsing, you're screwed. Inside the plane you'll be fine.

Yeah, I had guessed that - just thought it quite amusing. However, I'm fairly sure if it were to break whilst I was on a plane, Apple would probably point to the spec sheet ant tell me I wasn't covered...

Good for you. Anything else you'd care to add?
Not anymore, I shall take my additional comments to the grave.

Take your common sense and get out, you're not wanted here

So, as a lifelong Windows user, what am I likely to find most difficult
Contextual menus in things like Finder are IMO shockingly limited.
Having to learn a whole load of keyboard shortcuts.
and what will I like?
Everything looks pretty and shiny.
IMO, if I was a gadget, I'd shack up with W7 and start a family but I'd like a bit of foxy OSX on the side once in a while.

As a recent convert to osx (albeit a mbp rather than air) you will be fine swapping over, presuming all the software you use is available on the os. I use Paralells a bit too just for a few programs and testing.
Best thing I did was upping the ram to 8gig and having a solid state drive. Ultra responsive.
