Got a very old and breaking up badly tarmac drive way (approx 60sqm). Can’t stump up for paviors and concrete and tarmac are working out to be just as expensive, so looking at using some form of aggregate as a cheaper alternative. Anyone tackled such a job, any tips; depth to dig out, weed barriers, best type of aggregate etc?

Take look at is site paving expert loads of info, I found it a help.

Check the price of the aggregate you like, it may not end up as cheap as you hoped.

Try freecycle or even ebay. I managed to get 15sqm of black paving for £35 after someone had built and extension and lifted a load of blocks and wanted rid of them.

It may be worth a check with your local councils regs regarding drive ways. I don’t know if they will affect you if as you already have a drive way however, I know up here in Aberdeen for a new driveway you can not have any loose material within 2m of public land (a path or a road).

Or put down a non-permeable without planning permission.
