I’m thinking about buying a dedicated server machine at the moment for hosting files and some software.

I was talking about this a couple of nights ago, in relation to maybe getting a Mac Mini as a server, and wondering about using it for Windows based software. AWS was mentioned as a cost effective solution. Has anyone used it? If so, does it work, and is it cost effective? Anything I need to be aware of…?

Another thing to bear in mind if you are going to be hosting at home is bandwidth – upstream (outgoing) rates are a fraction of downstream (incoming) for most domestic broadband connections so if your application requires decent transfer rates you may need to look at upgrading.

No, it’s purely to act as host for software / files for personal use. Not vast amounts of data at all.

Website hosted by fasthosts, and will probalbly keep it there.
