When my brother in law emigrated, he flew out on christmas day, which he insisted was the cheapest time to fly, as nobody wanted to be on a plane at that time.
True, according to my mate who worked at trailfinders. His advice was also to book as early as possible if you can't be incredibly flexible. He sorted last minute flights for us last December, as our original flights were cancelled. They were £1400 each. His recommendation for a cheap airline was Asiana, whilst my mum, who's done the trip at least 8 times now, swears by Emirates. Any reason why you have to go at christmas? School hols time there as well. BTW, take a side trip to Tasmania, awesome place

Definitely consider a stopover somewhere. Cathay for HK; BA, Qantas or Thai for Bangkok; Malaysian perhaps for KL? Just gives you a day or two to get the circulation flowing again before you set off on the next leg.
Apart from that, shop around?

By the way Elf, the prices I quoted for flights really were just for return to Syndey, nothing else
Oof!
Still, I spose for the whole family, at Christmas time, that's to be expected I spose.

+1 For Emirates as you dont have to go via London.

Maybe it depends on the airline - it was about £200 cheaper with Asiana, but I decided that I hadn't seen my family at Christmas for 10 years so paid the extra. Then my flight was grounded so didn't get there until the 29th anyway
I'm not sold on the stopover idea tbh, although I'm a bit biased because I want to see my family for as much time as possible. Who cares how tired you are when you come back though. I've done a 30 hour transit landing in the afternoon and been working the next day. Didn't fall asleep once
