  • This looks interesting, LEDs that put out more energy as light than they use from electricity.

    Not much science behind it in the article and they work best at very low voltages, but they could have potential for bike lights one day.

    So now we need to wrap our lights in insulation?
    Colder weather = more efficient?

    Other way round, they’re drawing heat from their surroundings.

    Same article with a few comments, some of them from people who appear to know what they’re talking about.

    how efficient they are and how bright they are are not the same thing
    pico watt is quote a small unit of electricity [ one milion million of a watt or 10-12]
    I wonder if the human eye can see the light from them

    You guys all know that 69 picowatts of light is 6.9 x 10 to the -11 watts of light, right? It’s the same power output as a single cell in your body. It’s almost nonexistant. Normal LEDs use about 3 watts, that’s 3,000,000,000,000 picowatts!

    I can remember the first digital watches in the mid ’70s.
    I think it was about £4 for LCD or £2 for LED.
    The LED ones were crap, you couldn’t read them in daylight.
