It was bound to happen really. Rules is rules and races have rules, but sometimes unadulterated fun is what it’s really about.
Rightly or wrongly cyclcocross in North America has much more audience participation, beer, bacon ‘n’ banter, and for a long time there’s been an underground of non-sanctioned, few-rules racing.
Last weekend ‘Incredibly Cross’ ran its first ‘friends’ race, largely under the radar, on some open ground at Mitcham in South London, UK.
Promo e-flyers encouraged beer and heckling, a pinpoint on a map-grab was the only joining detail and a Le Mans style start mixed up the traditional ‘cross format from the off.
Judging by the photos on social media, the organisers certainly met their promise of a ‘super low-key’ affair, but their guerrilla format might just be breaking ground in Blighty.
So far Incredibly Cross only seems to exist on Twitter and Instagram, but there is the promise of an ‘official’ round 1 coming soon.
