Every day’s a school day. Now I know what’s causing my intermittent hot and smelly rear end (arf). Initially thought it might have been brakes (on exhaust side) binding, but inspection resulted in no burnt fingers. Thanks!

    Interesting PH thread on this

matt_outandabout – you win with that mini. Take your foot off the gas on a bend, and you’re in the nearest hedge. Terrifying things.

I also worry about the dog, it’s not it’s fault, the owners doing. We seen each other for at least a minute and he never altered his riding or tried to control the dog. Now that I think about it, if i owned a dog and was riding towards a cyclist in the pitch black with our lights fairly high powered, I’d not think twice about slowing down to try and control the dog. You just don’t continue with a black dog in the darkness of night at cycling speeds. This is the reason

Everything you are saying should have happened, should have happened. One guy’s inaction/lack of imagination has resulted in you and his dog paying the price. That is very unfair, and I sympathise with you. He should have insurance…

No offence but if the dog gets frightened by bike WTF are you doing taking it riding in a area where there will be bikes?
I suspect shit will happen if this is your attitude

It’s a turn of phrase. As is I hope your threatening tone.

ETA – @Junkyard, thanks for the edit 🙂 Will hasten to add, dog is not afraid of bikes, is very well-trained, and I haven’t got to mental stamina to take her to a trail centre full of STWers.

That sounds awful Martin – glad there are no broken bones, and hopefully no lasting damage to you. As a dog owner and cyclist (and often both at the same time), and without knowing a) how busy/well-sighted/wide the path is b) speeds involved c) prevalence/appropriateness/legality of people riding with dogs on the path d) how erratically the dog was straying from it’s course I’d put this down to ‘shit happens’. Accidents do happen. But then I am quick to take an anti litigation stance, believing that common sense should prevail. Good old fashioned dialogue should see all parties come out of this with the appropriate recompense. But I also understand that this isn’t always possible.

Be interested to hear how this one unfolds – had a couple of close calls both with me nearly hitting other peoples’ dogs and other riders giving mine a fright.

One of our best days out up there was mid-winter. Got to the steep bit on Swirral Edge, weather turned, tested everything we knew getting down, finished up with a pint in the sun in Patterdale.

You can work out where she is from the AIS of the three tugs holding her on-station: Vortex, Ginger & Multratug.

Didn’t even think of that! Thanks hf.

DT78 – Ferry may not go that close as they come in from the NW to avoid the bank that the Hoegh Osaka hit, still prob a better view than from land. Beach in Osborne bay may be a good bet if you can get down there. BBC has it North of the Southern shipping lane: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-30768102 and no AIS since 5/1 so maybe worth working out how close to IoW it is – Lee on Solent may be better bet if it’s North of the deep water channel.

    Sorry, keep remembering things…

road 48 and 47 around Hvalfjordur which is deserted now route 1 takes the tunnel.

+1 YES! And Europe’s highest waterfall is a short walk from the top of Hvalfjordur. Camped in a bush here and got stamped on by a sheep.

Hi – Yes. Sort of. Well no. We set out to, self-supported style. Heading clockwise, but up F35 rather than round the ring road for the ‘first’ bit. Drama unfolded as follows:

    1) F35 closed in late June because of snow
    2) No bother, we’ll go anticlockwise in the hope that the F35 is open in a week or so
    3) Got to Vik, Grimsvotn volcano eruption meant thick ash in the air and impassable roads turned us back.
    4) Ok, we’re trapped. Let’s see as much of the SW corner of Iceland as we can and do some hiking too
    5) Front hub destroyed itself, taking forks with.
    6) Back to Reykjavik, hired a bike did 1-2 day trips from the capital, saw some amazing stuff, did some camping in the sticks, sat in a hot puddle or two, covered 500 miles or so in the South West.

Bumped into a chap who was off up to Vesturland and Vestfirdir for a couple of weeks. You’d miss this on a circumnavigation but I bet there’s some good stuff up there. If you want more info drop me an email. And yes, it’s windy.

As said get trained, lying timber can be tricky and a chainsaw needs to be given the utmost respect.

This, and also timber is often left deliberately as part of conservation/woodland regeneration programmes.

We’ve had a prompt, honest, reasonably priced boiler repair from this guy: http://www.johnmaneely-gasengineer.co.uk/contact-us He also installed our current system back in 2007, but that was before we moved here.

    it rocks

I can’t put the thing down. Truly brilliant

Maybe if I could get this enthused about cleaning I wouldn’t stink

I don’t think it’s to do with enjoyment; it’s the only thing I can control in a house that contains 1 woman, 2 kids under 3, a near feral car, and a mad springer cross… Back to the cat – watching half a mouse, then quarters, eighths, sixteenths etc go round and round the cylinder is something I won’t forget in hurry.

Just got one too, and I can’t put the thing down. Truly brilliant. We got one of the stick/handheld things at the same time and now spot cleaning is really easy (yes, I acknowledge other manufacturers make small, cordless hoovers). Couldn’t believe what came out of the rugs/carpets, and we thought we were pretty clean. Cleaner house and much happier for it. +1 for the DC39…

Slight hijack, but some of the responses may aid OP’s decision – really struggle to get my 800 to record accurate data when using it for running. It keeps cutting out. Have tried putting in pockets and holding in my hand, neither with any success. Before I buy a watch, any tips for success?

Can’t comment on longevity as only used mine a couple of times, but I’m a fan. Not too big, not too small, grippy in the wet. Long background of riding flats for BMX and these feel just right to me.

Always asssumed that sort of thing was a scam aimed at intimidating money out of awkward feeling residents rather than integrating ex-cons back into the workforce.

    It pains me to agree.

Depends on what you paid, but specialist will be scrutinise closely. It’s a second-hand car, and not all that needs to be fixed at once. Brake pipe is a cheap part, but depends what’s in the way. Maybe overkill to fix some relatively minor things, but why not go for a new exhaust – boxsters can sound great.

If you don’t want to buy a house, buy a survey. *ducks and runs away*.

If it’s come down to small sums, do you love the house enough? If it’s big numbers then probably worth pursuing with a much reduced offer. How will you feel if that offer is rejected?

Thanks everyone. Love that pic skiprat, believe that’s Leeds too…. update, redistributed things a bit (around the skip), put excess in black bin (collection tomorrow), different driver came back at 6.30 this am chucked a tarp over everything, loaded up and toddled off. Skip still a good 2 ft above level – guess there’s some subjectivity involved here!

Is it on your private land?

Nope, on the street, with licence. Lights have stopped working, no cone supplied.

    Combustible

    I like that one.

I would suggest a massive piece of tarp in the back of your car load the bags fold/tie up get to the dump as quick as possible and unload the whole lot.

I think this may be the quickest way of solving the problem.

Have you paid the skip guys?

I couldn’t possibly comment on the economics of property ownership.

Not tongue in cheek at all – I have no idea how much houses cost out there, and there are tons of variables, and different ways of financing this sort of thing and measuring the return depending on what you want to get out of it. Great place for a holiday though.

Parents have a house on lake Balaton which we go and visit (step mother is Hungarian). I’d say well worth a holiday (as do many German people). You can make a nice drive of it too via Vienna and some nice bits of Germany. Many people in the area make their own wine – would recommend making lots of friends, and visiting as many cellars as possible!
