Two men were walking through the woods and came upon a deep hole. One of them picked up a stone and threw it into the hole and stood listening for the rock to hit the bottom – nothing.
He said to the other “that must be a deep hole – let’s throw a big rock in there and listen for that to hit the bottom.” The men found a rock and tossed it into the hole. They listened for some time and – nothing.
They agreed that this must be one deep hole and maybe they should throw something even larger into it, so they found a big log. They picked the log up and both threw it to the hole, listening intently – nothing.
All of a sudden, a goat charged out of the woods, running like the wind, and jumped straight into the hole. The men were astounded.
After they carried on walking, they met an old farmer who asked the men if they had seen a goat. They told the farmer what they had just seen and asked if that could have been his goat.
The farmer said “No, that couldn’t have been my goat – mine was tied to a big log.”

I have also been getting the fake Google play pop-up posted by gofasterstripes et al.

Three times in two days (Samsung Galaxy Android 6.0.1).

Two further days of not viewing STW on a phone – no pop-ups.

Don’t want to be the ‘bah humbug’.
However, as a cautionary tale for the dog owners:

A week ago a relative arrived home to discover their dog had eaten a whole box of mince pies. As they contained raisins this meant a two-day stay at the vet and a VERY large bill (fortunately dog is now fine and was insured).

    From the RSPCA:

    “Grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants

Any quantity of these can be toxic. Cooking or baking doesn’t reduce the risk of poisoning.

Poisoning may initially result in vomiting and diarrhoea and subsequently in kidney failure (which may occur a few days after the initial effects).”

Hey sands… That’s a direct from the government website!!!

Your linked government website covers it separately thus:

Lock knives are not classed as folding knives and are illegal to carry in public without good reason.
    Lock knives:
have blades that can be locked and refolded only by pressing a button
can include multi-tool knives – tools that also contain other devices such as a screwdriver or can opener

    penknife law
(See my post toward the bottom of page 1)

    Daftvader – Good looking website

If constructive comment is helpful, in your UK LAW section:

carry a knife in public without good reason – unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62cm) or less

Really needs to be something like:

carry a knife in public without good reason – unless it’s a knife with a non-locking folding blade 3 inches long (7.62cm) or less
    or
carry a knife in public without good reason – unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62cm) or less that does not lock in position

Police Scotland (Published yesterday – 26 February 2016)
Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015

Dates announced for air weapons licensing scheme

“Anybody who wants to use or own an air weapon, will be able to apply to Police Scotland for an air weapon certificate, or a permit in some circumstances, from 1 July 2016.

This gives users six months to get a certificate before new rules tightening access to air weapons, introduced in the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, come into effect from 31 December 2016

Currently looking at a Manfrotto 680b – any other suggestions?

    midlifecrashes – Member
At 6ft will the monopod bring the viewfinder to eye level?

It looks like the maximum height of the 680B is 1.54m

I have an ancient 3-section Manfrotto 134B (‘bear-killer’ © ninfan) which goes to 1.64m without a head. I’m also 6ft and wouldn’t want it much lower.

    I’m definitely a Manfrotto fan (tripods = n plus 1).
However, my ‘go to’ monopod is a 5-section Giottos which goes to 1.90m.

With the 1.90m Giottos, four* of the five sections will do for most situations when also using a quick-release ball-head.
Using all five sections, the extra height is useful if you are on an incline (or standing on something) with the base of the monopod below your feet.

*Use the largest diameter ones, because they’re stiffer.

For indoor events (I.e. no gear bag) I’d recommend the Gitzo GC5330 monopod holster which clips over your belt. (Combined with a piece of elastic around the monopod / your leg.)

    Opinion: Manfrotto, but longer.

“…It was switched on to channel 2, and someone was blasting out the Laughing Policeman over the airwaves.”

If it’s any reassurance – a quick Google of: Laughing Policeman walkie talkie

shows youtube clips of this happening in Manchester / NW a couple of years ago.

    And this:

“Just wondered has anyone else been hearing The Laughing Policeman being played on the pmr bands, tonight it was on channel no 2 …and strong !”

When being set assignments, read the flipping question as well. And when you are sure you know what they are asking you, read it again.

    ^^^ This
RTFQ should be imprinted on your brain.

Also, keep going back to re-read the question.
It’s all too easy to ‘drift’, particularly if you’ve found source material that is interesting, good quality, but not actually answering the original question.

Correctly used, referencing should contribute validity and authority to your written work.
As an undergraduate you are not presumed to be an expert.
If I use MTBs as an example.
Your opinion on their design might be creative, interesting, even original; however, it will ‘carry more weight’ if combined with references from say Robert Egger, Gary Fisher, Keith Bontrager.

If there is any sort of group assessment involved, beware. You are only as good as the weakest/least committed member.

    ^^^ This plus lots

Early on our course we had the option of a ’Statistics’ module, which was pretty much: ‘How to use MS Excel to register / display / create / extrapolate data‘.
This was hugely useful throughout the course.

There is sometimes one definitive text / source regarding a particular subject.
E.g. back in the 1980s there was a book called ‘Motorcycle Chassis Design’ by Tony Foale. No competent person would have written on that particular subject without having read / referenced it.
There may be an equivalent for logistics.

If you find you are ‘word-tied’ and cannot get a start into what you want to write – a useful ‘trick’ is to draw a sketch / schematic and then describe it.

Is that a clown standing two pits down in the original picture?

That’s not just any clown. That’s Ronald himself!

Enlarging the image, it appears to be a person in a red t-shirt and beige trousers attempting to s(h)it on someone else’s head. HTH :-)

Remember 1994 German GP – Jos (Max’s dad) Verstappen pit stop.

Tabloids ran the headline: “Ignited colours of Benetton”

The FIA investigation “revealed Benetton had been using an illegal fuel valve without a fuel filter that allowed fuel into the car 12.5% faster than a legal fuel valve.”

    … and removable stealing wheel.

8O Does that count as a Freudian typo?

Following the last “where’s my ‘kin Land Rover gone?” thread…

I’ve settled on (at least) a Disklok for the Discovery. On the basis that when I park for a country walk / ride, or even just shopping, I don’t want to be carrying a removable steering wheel.

Unlike the ones that go through the wheel, it can’t be used for leverage to snap the column lock.

    Been said before… Lofty.

Does anyone remember the name of a TV series that Lofty Wiseman mentored? (This was many years ago before any of the ‘SAS are you tough enough?’ type shows.)

There were a group of people from varying backgrounds being trained for a trek across part of (IIRC) South America. One was an ex-soldier who was a front-runner but got sick on the trek and had to retire. During training they had to put their heads in a terrarium with a snake in it. Also, I vaguely remember Lofty getting his beer stolen.
