It never stopped me from riding again today! 😛

The sooner folk who don’t like wearing helmets have an accident the better, get ’em out of the gene pool! I had high speed crash on some rocks at Grizedale on Saturday…I couldn’t believe I got right back up with just a few grazes. Turns out it was the side of my helmet that took the brunt of the impact, I felt like I’d had an uppercut off Mike Tyson this morning! God knows what I would have been like without a helmet on.

What’s inners like? The downhill reputation puts me off a little (I’m a big scaredycat!).

It is a red graded XC loop. There is a (optional) black section which I would have said you would be fine, a mate of mine broke his elbow on there though!!! It’s only the last DH you need to watch out on and there’s a big warning sign at the start of it…take it easy on there and you’ll be alright, it’s all rideable, except for the third (last) drop near the top.

Do Mabie and then Dalbeattie. Dalbeattie doesn’t have many hills and can easily be done when your legs aren’t fresh.

    Innerleithen or Ae

Ae – seriously? It has no flow, it’s only the last downhill that’s any good!

I was after a Nicolai last year, an AC though. After looking at the weight for the price, I decided on a carbon frame instead (Mojo HD).
I’m not saying that might be the right bike for you, but get an idea on heavy you want your build to be…I’ve been riding with someone this weekend on a lovely AM, Cane Creek shock and Fox Vans. It weighed 37.5lbs and that was with wheels that weren’t heavy and trail tyres. My HD is 28lbs with the same tyres and wheels that would only be 100g lighter. Admittedly, mine has air suspension and a 32mm fork. If I added a coil, bigger fork, chain device and a stronger handlebar. How much extra weight would I add? 3lbs? I’d only use a bike that weighed more than, lets say 32lbs, if I was using uplifts or riding World Cup DH tracks!

EDIT: Have you looked at a SC Nomad Carbon? More small bump compliance (over DW link) and very light for its capabilites. I went for the HD instead so I could change the travel.

I take it’s a complete bike you’re after too? The tax on a complete bike is more than what it is for a frame/bike parts.

Cycle…you get to see all the places in-between the places tourists would normally go to.

My main reason for looking to the USA was the exchange rate is in my favour

By the time you pay the postage, insurance and tax it won’t cheap anymore (It could cost more than £500!). I don’t think many places would ship them to the UK either due to distributor rights.
Germany would be the best place to look. It would cost £30-50 to post, no import tax either. If they won’t post, cheap flight and put it in your suitcase. It depends on how bad you want one I suppose.

If the Pike has only got 140mm, that won’t help…you would be better with a slightly longer fork on a 575.

The AYUP lights are really good for both. The heads move easily so you point them away from traffic. They come with extra batteries, so you can always have one fully charged. You can use one on the bars and one on your head when MTB’ing. Then one on the bars and use the other as a rear when on the road…they come with red lenses you can pop in for that.
Typical STW though, I haven’t got a set! A mate swears by them though. 😀

Good luck! Never take your Mothers side on things over your Wifes. My Grandad lived 3 doors away from us when I was a kid, my Mother and him didn’t have to do much to upset one another…my Dad used to keep out of it or take my Grandads side, resulting in my Mother falling out with him too!

I wonder if he learnt this out of necessity after they had to start keeping sharp implements away from him? 😀

I was only there a fortnight ago, it’s still very much intact. I didn’t realise that the new surface bypassed some of the original track, the twisty bit near the top is still there. It’s still a sickener losing so much height on the smooth stuff though.

Could you change to longer hoses and have them going in front of the bag, rather than behind it?

Ok – assuming using ‘lefty for all’:
    – Can the steerer be any size with step down cups for 1 1/8th headtube?
    – does the length need to be exact or is that ‘up to’ (I know years ago the HT needed to be an exact length)

Did you mean to put ‘steerer’ and ‘head tube’ the other way round? If so, yes.
The length doesn’t have to be exact, just less than. The spacers inside the crown clamps can be moved up and down to suit. If the length is exact though, less spacers are needed so end up with a tidier looking setup. I’ve a frame here with a custom head tube that’s 105mm, when using a CK headset no make up spacers are needed.

This diagram might shed some light on a few things:

To fit a standard Lefty, the head tube plus headset needs to be 137mm or less. There is also an XL version where the space between the crowns is 163mm.
It will be easiest fitting one with a ‘Lefty for All’ 1.125″ steerer. To fit one with the Cannondale SI is more difficult…I think the steerer is 1.5 but the Cannondale head tubes are not the same size as other bikes that take a 1.5 (I think I’ve got that the right way way round?). They use their own size bearings/headsets.

Edit: I think I have got that last bit wrong. Otherwise you would be able to fit one using a standard 1.5″ headset, which I’m sure you can’t.

monkeysfeet – lakeside bridle path is the best in the area.

Except on a sunny day when the kids are off school.

We’re looking to do some pretty epic all day rides with some very rewarding rocky downhills.

Emmodd – I was basing my suggestions on this.

I would have said you would be better staying in Ambleside or Keswick. Both the 3 Passes and the 4 Passes would be good rides to do. Then you do something around Grizedale area too.
Have a look on these threads for more info (both on here):

    Two

You’re over thinking it…you will be shortening them when they’re fixed to the bike right? You make the cut near the lever, if you need something to hold the hose after you’ve cut it, wrap an elastic band around the bar and poke it through that.
You will need olives but will be able to re-use the barb if you’re careful when cutting the hose off them.
Look on the Shimano website for instructions:
    Brake Hose.
    Saint Docs.

What brakes have you got? There will probably be instructions for shortening the hoses on the manufacturers website.
You will probably need new olives unless they’re Hope ones with the split in them.
You don’t need to empty all the fluid out either. Just keep the hose upright so it doesn’t spill out.

It was the older ones that cracked, the ones with 4.5″ maximum travel and the round seat stays.

Edit: Like the one in the above pic…that’s as old as the hills, it hasn’t even got the machined bearing covers.

Kayak, I think you’re going to struggle to find a trip at that time of year. Most are in Spring or getting on for Autumn. That goes for most other destinations too, July and August aren’t good months to choose (I know you haven’t much choice).

I was going to suggest getting in touch with KE Adventure[/url] for one of their brochures. The problem for you is that there is only one trip they do in that area at that time of year…it’s a semi-slick one too, not sure if that’s what you’re after?

I think a lot of it can be an age thing. A lot of younger business owners will probably have a website and email. Older ones on the other hand might not even use a computer, especially for any part of their work.

A lot of the pizza’s suggested on here are grim. How any frozen pizza can be classed as ‘best shop bought’ is beyond me! 😕

If you want the GPX files, download as a course instead and convert that that to GPX. Either load the course into GPSies.com or such like, then convert. You could also download GPXtoCRS instead…it works both ways.

Maybe not much help, I posted a pair for £12.50 with Parcelforce 48hr.
I think you might be able to send 1 wheel with the Royal Mail as a standard parcel. I think that costs £5 odd, as long as it weighs less than 2kg.

There’s that much conflicting and wrong information within this thread I can’t be bothered arguing!
OP – Stick with the yellow tape and try a Maxxis Minion in whatever flavour you want…non-UST will still be fine. If you’ve gone off Maxxis though, I don’t what to suggest but don’t try Panaracer’s.

A lot can depend on the frame size and your leg length. I’m tall but have short legs for my height…this means my reverb is about a mm from being all the way in after I’d already changed my saddle to a thinner one. I think there’s a lot of folk who wouldn’t be able to use a post with the standard 125mm drop never mind any more. I guess that’s why Rockshox fetched the 100mm out.
