Greg Minnaar: Retirement 20 Questions with the GOAT

I just hope it doesn’t put people off. Had a third person asking if I am selling it on Facebook.
charliewFull Member🤔 that’s very true Cougar. I guess because they’re my photos I kinda feel like I should do something, but you’re right it isn’t really affecting me
charliewFull MemberI’ve come across them quite a bit when trying to buy tickets to gigs from event pages before, just never seen it done bikes before.
It’s normally quite easy to spot the fake accounts though, as all their publicly viewable pictures are uploaded at exactly the same time.
Guy who messaged on eBay asked me to send another photo of the frame as proof, which I did, but that eBay account was setup this year and had no feedback. Wondering if I’ve just provided the scammer with another picture of the frame so they can try and prove they’ve got the frame 🤦🏻♂️
charliewFull MemberCheers for the replies, and glad to read there isn’t such a thing for Shimano (I wasn’t going mad!).
Just read a bit more on the frame and it looks like it’ll run none boost anyway. Should have spent more time looking at that before wasting my time on something I didn’t need to bother with.
Many thanks for the responses though!
charliewFull MemberAnyone got a spare Amyl and the Sniffers ticket for Gorilla in Manchester on Sunday? Desperately want to see them but don’t have a ticket…
charliewFull MemberEbike’s with the cycle to work scheme to soften to cost. If it’s steep enough that people consider pushing then it’s unlikely to get a non cyclist attempting it, but I suspect an Ebike would convince them.
charliewFull MemberStill not where the heb tech is!
Most of the fun HB tech stuff is unfortunately footpaths or even less than that… and most people won’t want to post the details on a public forum. However people have recorded them as Strava segments, so using the segment explorer will find you a lot. Use OS maps to find the steep wooded areas, and then point Strava segment explorer in that area and have see what you find. Then from the segments have a look at some of the top 10 times, check out routes of those riders, and then piece something together.
Sorry for being cryptic Zinger, I was in a similar position when I moved to the area and wasn’t all that impressed with the bridleway routes. Which I found odd as HB gets such a good write up. It wasn’t until I started riding with people who knew their way round that you discover the fun that can be had if you go beyond your right of way.
As it’s been said, Pecket Well is fun, and worth the slog up the road. It also holds up okay-with the bad weather, although the flatter middle section will be fairly boggy.
You could extend the bottom one a bit, where you descend at Shackleton to New Bridge, instead go North and take the bridleway along/down Crimsworth Dean. Then rejoin the road and head south to Pecket Well and take that descent to New Bridge.
Anyway I realise you’ve probably already done the ride now. Hope you both enjoyed it 👍🏻
charliewFull MemberDid a 2 night bike packing trip at the start of November last year. Frozen ground on the middle day with thick cloud cover when heading up Beinn a’Bhuid in the morning which broke and we had an amazing time on the top with lovely blue skies and crisp clear air (the descent was amazing too). Last day involved snow and hail with strong winds and serious wind chill. A big constrast.
Assuming you’ve got some hill walking experience and your prepared for the weather then doing a multi day trip staying in bothies would be my choice.
If you’re happy with hostels then I’d also be tempted to leave booking the accommodation until the last minute so you can be flexible for the weather. Could give you the option of the west coast if the weather is better on that side too.
charliewFull MemberI faced the same choice and only yesterday put a deposit down on a Following V1. Been trying to decide for over a year! See my previous thread.
Tested a none longshot Flaremax and Following MB and preferred how the Following climbed. The Flaremax feels very poppy and was great just the following just felt a better all round bike for my riding.
charliewFull MemberAre you using Tor? Or have a proxy of some sort?
Does it do it on both Wi-Fi and the cellular network?
If on Wi-Fi you might find some IT kit in your house has been infected and is now part of a Russian bot network.
charliewFull MemberI just use my Bird Zero… sure there might be more suitable bikes out there but it’s more important to just get out first and figure out what you want/need.
charliewFull MemberSame has happened to me… well almost. Water down kitchen sink is causing water to back up and out the washing machine drain and on to the kitchen floor. I tried pouring boiling water on pipe work and that hasn’t worked.
I’ve stopped using the toilet too as the last thing I want is for that to back up and onto the kitchen floor!
I am just wait till it thaws. But you could using a hair drier to try and unfreeze the pipe work.
charliewFull MemberAny excuse is a good excuse for a new bike! Although bigger tyres and/or dropping the pressure a bit might help? Is the bike more fun on the blue runs?
charliewFull MemberLomo dry bag:
http://www.lomo.co.uk/acatalog/Dry-Boxes-dry-bags-uk.html#a770
Although I have to admit I commute on my motorbike with it but should be good for cycling. Perhaps a little sweaty as there is no mesh back.
charliewFull MemberAre you sure it’s the bike? What aren’t you finding fun/struggling with?
charliewFull MemberE: fish and salt and pepper chips
D: 12yr Highland Park
W: Rugby followed by Derry Girls. Would recommend it, while on the Irish comedy theme I’d also recommend The Young Offenders
charliewFull MemberGood luck and get the samples sorted ASAP.
I matched through Anthony Nolan after being on the register for 5 years. Unfortunately after taking blood samples nothing more happened. Either my match didn’t last long enough or there wasn’t much point in doing the transfusion 😕
charliewFull MemberGuess this is the topic you couldn’t find:
https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/which-os-mapping-software/
I got an email from ViewRanger the other day which implies they do a subscription service now. So I plan to try them when this year is up 🙂
charliewFull MemberLooked small enough to brace back against the wall and use foot holes to progress up. Probably not pleasant but that dangerous.
charliewFull MemberBe interested to read the responses. 6ft 4”, so pretty sure I’d be getting an XL.
Still trying to decide if I want a Cotic FlareMAX or an Evil Following v1…
charliewFull MemberBunkhouse in Braemar Lodge ticks all the boxes.
Stayed in November, was nice but perhaps not the best layout for a bunkhouse.
charliewFull MemberAlthough as Jonnyboi points out the £25 replacement scheme is probably cheaper and easier than the ifxit stuff.
charliewFull MemberStarted using Outdoors GPS with a subscription then moved to the OS app because it was too buggy.
Now moved back to the Outdoors GPS app because I missed the feature of permanent way points, and the OS road atlas style map. The not so colourful large scale map you get with the OS is crap, they’ve copied Google maps when there’s was much better!
Have to admit the OS app is way more sleek than the Outdoors GPS.
Looked at ViewRanger but I am cautious of their business model. My Dad used to use MemoryMap before smartphones and purchased quite a bit of mapping from them. But the amount of hassle he had from them trying to keep those purchased maps on various devices has meant he’s given up.
The fact that app developers have to continually maintain apps to me means a subscription model is the only sustainable way to do it. The last thing I want to do is buy something which is equivalent to a 10 year subscription only for the company to go bust in 7 and I am left without what I bought.
I am quite keen on ViewRanger though, especially since you can get Harvey Maps digitally (although the areas they generally cover I’d always want a paper backup).
charliewFull MemberWith Squirt it is definitely all about chain prep before applying, along with leaving to dry before riding (overnight).
On long 40 km+ rides it does wear off.
Also Scotroutes it is biodegradable..?
charliewFull MemberHelsport do some nice tents… something like this?
http://www.helsport.no/fonnfjell-superlightAlso 15% at a local supplier:
http://www.tamarackoutdoors.co.uk/Mobile/MBSCProduct.asp?PdtID=21148119charliewFull MemberOops 😳
Guess I was looking for numbers but that clarifies it.
Might keep a spare bottle for those snow rides but will keep on with the usual.
charliewFull MemberI guess it depends where in the country you are but in the wet north west I find textile jackets get smelly and cold over winter. Less likely to affect the Gore-Tex Pro stuff but I find you end sitting in a wet paper bag that saps all the heat out you on long trips. It also takes an age to dry (hence it getting smelly) as you end up with water trapped between the outer and waterproof layers.
Regular cleaning might solve the bad smells but who wants the faff of regularly washing a jacket in winter.
I’ve still got my 10 year old 90,000 miles Dainese jacket which is way past being waterproof and use over gear. Once it starts leaking it goes in bin and new stuff is bought. It drys quickly, doesn’t get smelly and doesn’t cost a fortune.
Also make use of the previous 6 hour rain radar on Met Office app to decide if I need to put waterproofs on.
charliewFull MemberOld car I phoned the local Mitsubishi dealer and they recommended a car locksmith up the road for being at least half the price. Was a swish shop so they must have been coining it in. Guy who created the key seemed to be genuinely pleased when the key worked, guessing they hadn’t done a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin before.
KAP autolocks in Rochdale.
charliewFull MemberI was given one by a family member and I haven’t had a good meal from the few times I’ve used it. Always end up with some watery tasteless food even when it’s been cooked for 8 hours. It never seems to reduce and so none of the flavours concentrate.
Any suggestions?
charliewFull MemberMight be worth contacting http://www.mountainbikekerala.com While they are at the wrong end of the country, they might know of some operating up there which could help… maybe?
charliewFull MemberI think we should start using the 3 words coordinates system. Assuming the recipient provides the right 3 words there is no excuse for not finding an addresss.
Post codes have the advantage of being able to be sorted by human memory but I am sure the bigger issue is the last mile delivery rather than sorting to a district.
I also don’t understand why the Post Office hasn’t capitalised on it’s network of shops and start accepting deliveries from any company for a small fee. Good way of making them more relevant in a modern world.
charliewFull MemberI can think of two potential ways to get your number:
– the sim card has numbers stored on it.
– your number is listed as an emergency contact on the lock screenI guess they could have potentially guessed the pin too or picked pocketed it unlocked…
It could easily be switched on and the message not displayed if it is somewhere that doesn’t have signal or by removing the SIM card and stopping it going online. Which will stop the Apple Find my Phone features working.
I didn’t think ‘rooting’ an iPhone was a thing these days, so expect for stripping for parts I can’t see how a stolen iPhone makes any money. Probably why they try to extort money from you for the return of the phone.
Change all password even those ‘fingerprint’ protected, just in case. Could be a good time to switch on 2 factor authentication on both your and your daughter’s accounts. They may try to target you.
I’d also check Facebook privacy settings and prevent searching via email address and mobile phone number.
Make sure it’s reported to the police and they are informed of the extortion attempts! They might one day find the group responsible for this extortion.
charliewFull MemberIf it’s GoreTex then you’ve got a 5 year guarantee. But it will be sent off and tested.
Make sure you clean your washing machine to ensure there is no detergent left before putting your coat in. Get the tray out and give the tray and tray slot a good clean before washing some tea towels on a couple of rinse cycles.
I could only recommend following the instructions on the garment but it has always felt wrong ironing a waterproof so in the past I’ve done a short tumble dry.
charliewFull MemberDoes it need to be West Lancashire? Todmorden/Calderdale is pretty awesome (although as a western Lancastrian I do technically live in Yorkshire now), great riding, food, and rail links.
