    When I try to browse contents, why can't I see the external HDD that I've connected to the XBox via USB?

    I can see a memory stick pluged into the same USB port no problem btw.

    I think you can only have a maximum size of 16gb for plug in devices, but you can format your HDD to any number of 16gb partitions.

    Are you sure you have it formatted with the FAT32 file-system as opposed to NTFS? The Xbox can only read FAT or FAT32 partitions.
