  • Will a 7 speed cassette fit an 8 speed wheel?

    Hi,

I’m looking to build up a hack commuter bike. I’ve got 7 so shifters and a wheel without a cassette. Not sure whether the wheel is a 7 or 8 speed. If it’s an 8 speed, is that any different to a 7? Will I need a spacer or owt to put a 7 speed cassette on?

    Thanks,

    Stu.

Yes you will need a spacer if wheel is 8 speed (4.5mm IIRC)

Thanks wiggles. Does the spacer go behind the largest cog?

I always thought a 7 speed was freewheel only not a cassette type

7 speed cassettes will also work with 8 speed shifters and vise versa. The distance between each sprocket is the same.

Thanks biffa, do you mean a spacer? I’m hoping that the wheel is an old 7speed but won’t know until I try it.

Appreciate the offer and might come back to you.
