  • Why do people need other people around them?
  • 2unfit2ride

I’m guessing the right answer is because as humans we all need company, for one reason or another if you get what I mean, but on a lower level why do we put up with the needs & lies of others just to have company?

As a general rule, the Human Race is a social species. Obviously there are exceptions, but the majority will (on a sliding scale) put up with a certain amount of inconvenience from others in order to benefit from the social interaction.

Science also suggests that the more socially interactive a species is, the faster it evolves. If true, this would explain a lot of things.

cynic, & obviously nodding to the others, yes I may be a tad north of sweet, but finding like minded fellows/fellowes’s these days is hard to do 😉

I have stopped riding with a good group of guys when one ar****le joined. He is a disruptive control freak I have to work with but choose to not socialise with 😕

I can happily spend hours at a time with the minimum amount of human interaction. I am also perfectly happy to talk to anyone at all about anything at all, lest someone accuse me of being an antisocial git.
I spent a week away at friends in South Devon a year or two back; the weather was dire, they live 350ft above sea level, the cloud base was 100 feet below their house, so I spent most of the week indoors, listening to 6Music, and reading books, with a jaunt down to the pub in Beesands in the evenings for food and beer.
    It was bliss.

Enjoying the company of others keeps us on an even keel. A well worded comment can keep us in check when we’re headed in the wrong direction: a barbed comment can convey the feeling of a whole social / familial circle, resulting in a change of behaviour or habits.

On the flip side, we need the approval of our peers too – but people can be jealous and unpleasant for the sake of it – are you experiencing something like this 2unfit?

    Other people keep us sane….

For all the benefits of working from home it can also be it’s own form of torture. Pity the fool that calls up to speak to me when I haven’t seen or spoken to another human being for a day and a half.

I’m with the OP on this one. Very happy to not talk to anyone for days/weeks on end, and given the choice will go out of my way to avoid having to make pointless conversation. However, it’s nice to know that other people are out there….

You need to re title your, title. Add the word “some” in there and i think you may just have it right.

I’m a bit of a loner, no I am. Always had a very small group of friends, less these days, that I choose to be with but I think I’m much better on my own TBH. I’m really rather happy if I don’t socialise preferring solo rides over groups, prefer travelling solo, prefer working solo, prefer being at home solo too.
If it wasn’t for work I think I’d choose not to see folk for weeks, but I don’t get to choose that. Also, if it wasn’t for MrsBouy clearing up and tidying the house to the extent I can’t bloody find anything, I think I’d not speak to her either 😆

Not everyone wants to listen to other folks “issues”, some just like being on their own.

Having said all that I’m on here, ohhh the ironing 🙄

I really enjoyed this book, bar the chanting.

I can go for weeks without vocal contact with people and be super happy about it. Never as yet put it to the test in a true ‘isolation’ set of circumstances. I frequently have to lock myself away from all social contact just to get a bit of peace, but this is usually just staying at home and not going out. In general I find being ‘social’ very tiring, and nearly always it requires me spending a day or two at either severely reduced or zero communication levels.

Few things make me happier than a few nights alone out in the hills, be it in a bothy, a bivvy or tent. Or some ramshackle cabin/refuge in the Pyrenees. Absolute bliss.

I think it’ll be difficult to arrange, but something I need to do in my life is spend a month somewhere in total isolation. Just to see what it’s like. Even then, it’s not true isolation if you know the clock is ticking.

Happy to socialise but need breathing space.I have a friend who openly admits he hates being on his own.

I can’t stand being with the same people for more than a few hours, drives me crazy. I have to be in control of when I interact with people and have to be able to break off and get away for periods. I’m also quite happy being by myself with absolutely no human interaction for days/weeks at a time. Online stuff is perfect for people like me because you can interact when you feel like it but still break off without going through some daft exit process.

I’m not really a people person, it has to be said.

I don’t. I have friends who don’t lie and ask for stuff. Not many, mind, but better to have a few good friends than many crap ones. No point in just going through the motions.

Like-minded company is important, but I’d rather spend time alone than with people I have nothing in common with.

I’m quite happy with certain persons, but have recently decided I don’t like people. This doesn’t make a lot of sense l know and is difficult to explain. I have never been good at meeting new people either.

It helps distract me from all the crap running through my head constantly. The again so does Dark Souls.

But I generally like people, they have to really grate on me before I don’t

I don’t worry about it, came into the world on my own, will leave it on my own. Saying that I do talk to my bikes on a regular basis.
