I’m quite partial to a Washington State or Oregon Pinot Noir, but a lot of the Californian is a bit too Sulphate-ish for me. The closest decent price offering though is the NZ Oyster Bay Pinot Noir – often under £10 in the supermarket.

Under a fiver and over %14 is my default but on the second week of the month where I have very little direct debit action going on I’m on the Stellenbosch as others have mentioned when I’m on a spare week of a five week month boom I’m smashing Back the apothic red with gay abandon.

The Aldi Stellenbosch is amazing for the money.

This Xmas treat yourself to a bottle of this from Aldi
    Grand Alberone
They sold it last year in half and full bottle sizes. It’s a chunky monkey of a red wine but if you treat it like a dessert wine and drink it with some nice dark chocolate, you’ve got a lovely dessert

This stuff packs a punch is at least as good as Ravenswood but £4:00 a bottle cheaper don’t buy it all before I stock up.

Someone mentioned Roche Mazet merlot – yes!! I brought a case home this year and it was ace. Will get more next year for sure (even if the pound halves against the euro, it’s still well worth it).

Their cabernet is another matter – not to be recommended.

Thirded at least for Aldi’s Toro Loco.

Wolf Blass Cav Sauv when it’s on offer in Morrisons.

The Autogrill service areas on Italian motorways were doing Chianti and Primitivo for E9.99 for 3 bottles. Perfectly quaffable but a bit far to go unless you happen to be in Italy.

I buy Roche Mazet Merlot from France by the box at 9 euro a pop. Tres bien! 🍷

Same here .. in fact bring a car load back in January as part of my Brexit no deal planning.

if you’re buying wine from Aldi I wouldn’t get too overexcited about the Toro Loco, it’s not as good as it used to be – when it first came out it was 100% tempranillo and won awards and beat posh wines in blind tastings etc, but now it’s a blend using bobal and it’s not as earthy, it’s got a jammy edge to it which makes it a bit ordinary and the budget price shows

the NZ pinot noir is great, the Portugese one is great and the Argie Malbec is good too. the Stellenbosch I’ve not tried yet but I’ll give it a go
