VW

BMW, merc or audi all make decent cars, probably not worth the premium over say a mondeo for a basic 3 series, but as you go up through the range thy are clearly quality cars for the very wealthy, I would have to have a lot od spare cash before splashing it on one, but I do see the point of them.

VW however are no better than the competition (in many cases actually worse), but still charge a premium for branding, only an absolute fool would buy one.

Driven quite a few BMW's, always underwhelmed TBH, which is a shame because I've always fancied one.

Peugeot for the same reasons already mentioned, same goes for Renault and Citreon.

Wouldn't have a Fiat either, many bad experiences.

Audi, BMW. I don't like the way they are driven...quite often very aggressively turning ordinary roads into their "motorsport arenas" maybe these cars encourage this??

just today traded in the wife's somewhat unreliable Ford, so wouldn't have another in a rush. before that had she a Renault which was very poor, electrics and mechanically, so not one of them.

My last car was a VW Golf and it was lovely but not the most reliable. My current car (Company) is a BMW 3 tourer and it is excellent - streets ahead of the rest on quality and comfort.

Oh, and not a badge snob in any way, as evidenced by today's purchase of a Kia for the wife 🙂

This includes land rovers and range rovers

Which is strange cause i like land rovers and old RRCs and would love to get my hands on an old series 1 for a sunday drive.

When we go car shopping, our top 2 criteria are always (and I'm deadly serious here)

Not French
Not Grey or Silver or any colour that looks like grey or silver

After that pretty much anything goes.

Make? Dunno. Pretty much all manufacturers have something good in the range.

Nothing under 3L unless it has a turbo and probably nothing without 4wd. Probably. I'm fickle.

Ford- autoeletrics by chimpanzees on PCP

Audi- overpriced tat

pugrot and anything french

American built mercs as they some how remove all the things that merc were famous for, such as build quality and reliability and replace it with nasty plastics, annoying squeaks and the mechanical robustness of a kinder surprise toy.

yes I've owned lots of all of the above 😆

Audi. Same reason as Radioman. That and the "look at me" LED running lights

I've had a BMW. I'd have another. I'd have another Saab if someone else was paying the service bills.

I wouldn't have a Vauxhall. Mrs_drummer had two, a Nova & then an Astra. No end of problems, including on the Astra an EMU that went totally insane

I've had three Renaults. I haven't had a recent one, but I wouldn't be put off.

SSang Yong. I definitely wouldn't have one of those.

Mercedes. Unless someone else was paying the service bills.

I'd have another Alfa. Had two, great cars, shame about the dealers

Oh yeah - vauxhall zafira - worst car ever driven !

Gearbox was more vague than my land rover ! Clutch bite point apeared to be in the dash somewhere

It did good hand brake turns though - hire cars only redeaming feature - it really was a hatebox ! The insignia that replaced it when we went back was a nice if bland car !

I don't believe you can buy a truly bad car in the UK today.

Seems pretty daft to just write off a brand entirely purely on principle - especially a brand like BMW, who, whichever way you spin it, make some fantastic cars.

Forgot those. My parents bought one last year despite my advice; a Ssangyong Rexton. They use it for towing their caravan. 2.7 litres of gutless wobbly noise.

I'm struggling to think of any French car I'd buy. Never had anything but problems with every single one I've ever owned/leased/loaned.

See also Fiats and Ferrari's.

I don't believe you can buy a truly bad car in the UK today

I use a lot of hire cars in my job and I've been shocked at how much tat is out there. Ford and Vauxhall both produce junk from my recent experiences and I've even had the odd Seat which has really disappointed, something that I was quite surprised at given their VW links.

On recent experience my next car will not have a Ford or Vauxhall badge on the front. One Focus I had on hire was so flimsy I could see the bonnet flex at motorway speeds 😯

I also hate Vauxhalls insistence on electric parking brakes, hateful things.

On the other hand I've always had a soft spot for Fiats. Yes, they break but there is something charming about them when they are working. Plus when they do break they are cheap to fix, unlike my current 2006 Astra 😳

wrecker - agreed, my back is a bit dodgy anyway, but while I can drive either of our two Fords for hours with no problem, after an hour or two in any of the Vauxhalls I've have driven I'm in pain.

I've owned a number of different types, all of which have been largely reliable. They have included Alfa's and Peugeots.

I agree that it is difficult to make a "bad" car today and most of the issues that people highlight are probably more due to the fact that they may be "mechanically unsympathetic" or a reflection of their driving.

Lots of cars I find unattractive but to call the Ford Mondeo (a car which I find bland btw) "junk" really means you dont know what you are talking about. For the money it is one of the best, most reliable, well built and specced cars around. Frugal as well. 🙄 Its entirely up to you NOT to like it but to call it "junk" really ensures the rest of what you say will be ignored.

VW, which is pure prejudice and not based on anything I've personally experienced.

Renault, based on the PoS I've got parked out front which is continually going wrong.

Lamborghini- too many of those speed hump round here.
Otherwise as surfer says, it's difficult to build bad cars these days. Mondeos are bought by companies because they are cheap to run and reliable, same could be said for the Vectra but I've never driven one. My little Pug has done over 250.000km with only one mechanical problem, a blown turbo and I think I was responsible for that by putting too much oil in.
None of the Fords I had missed beats.
And I'm looking to buy an Audi, read into that what you want.

Wouldn't have an Audi or anything French or Italian or Korean.

My next car will 98% likely be a Mondeo.

🙂

EDIT: And nothing higher than a saloon, so no MPG or mini-MPGs. Unless I got a van, which would be pretty sweet actually.

Probably not a LandRoover/RangeRover/any other 4x4 brand as I'm not fussed by 4x4 (contary to what about 50% of the population here in Surrey seem to think) since I don't need off road performance. Although I'd buy a 4x4 quick car! Nothing to do about jealousy.

Otherwise anything thats the best car for my needs/wants. Hence probably not some US brands - eg. Chevrolet who seem to make poor cars compare to the competition.

The other odd thing is that people write off whole brands. Some makers make very good and very poor cars. VW Fox anyone?

I drive Mazdas, can't see that changing too soon to be honest. I've had 3 fantastic 323F's and I've had my current 52 plate Sport for 6 years, not had one single problem with it, except a bit of rust!
I had 2 Vauxhalls in between the 323F's both pretty unreliable and generally disappointing.
I don't like German cars, especially VW's because I think they're overpriced and over rated. I had a 58 plate Golf 1.4 TSi Sport for 4 weeks last year and I was glad to get rid of it!

BMW, because I've yet to see one with decent styling, and having a car that I can't drive when it snows is out as well. Peugeot again because the styling's ugly. A Mini, ugly car, calling it a Mini infringes Trades Description, with less room than the original. I'd love an Audi, especially an S-Line A5, although the possible RS1 is very appealing, with 4x4 and the hot TT 2.5 engine.
I'd happily buy a Citröen DS3, particularly the Racing.

Peugeot. I bought a brand new 206, and had it delivered on September the 11th, 2001. It was truly awful, gutless, compared to the 16v 1itre Micra I'd traded in for it. The interior creaked and squeeked, the ECU regularly died. It ate crank sensors. The exhaust rotted through. The aircon smelled bad

Hateful, horrid car. Stupid.

but to call the Ford Mondeo (a car which I find bland btw) "junk" really means you dont know what you are talking about.

our current fleet have been awful with more electrical gremlins than a copy of a copy of a copy of a magicshine light.

Mine went through a phase of trying to kill me by switching the engine off under braking and taking the power steering ABS etc.. with it, usually commin into corners or approaching roundabouts, went back numerous times until I refused to take it back until it was made safe. Apparently it's not uncommon with the new ones 😯

the rest have just;
lost all the dash board and central touch screen controls
refused to start on a regular basis
given random warning lights for no reason
had to have complete new dashboards fitted
unlocked themselves for a laugh
the GPS receivers in the ariel base let water in and stop working

yep mondeos are ace 😀

buy a drum kit. buy some extra cymbals, and some extra stands to put them on. Keep the stands in the boot. no problem. like having a fat lad sat over the rear axle, all the time

ok, I'll give you that one. TBH if I lived in the highlands I'd want something 4WD.

how often do we really get snow in England? Proper snow that isn't gone the next morning. Lake District excepted.

This time last year we were already under 8 inches of snow, this year it's unseasonably warm. any guesses what next year will be like? Is it really worth basing your choice of car for the next 5 years on a weather event that happens maybe once every 20 years? If you think it is then get a Landcruiser or something

I can't really say that any car available new in this country at the moment is crap - I've had some horrors in the past but you pays your money and takes your choice - I've had some great Renaults and Peugeots but some of the smaller current pugs are just cheap and nasty town cars - Fords - you can drive one and it's great and the next one is gash! - I don't like the styling of current BMW's, and I find that Audi's look very aggressive, Vauxhalls just look so bland and uninteresting. Some of the newer Korean offerings look good but the one I just wouldn't buy at the moment is the Nissan Juke - must have been styled by the RNIB. I've got a Merc V class - it does everything that I need it to do and TBH I would have bought it whatever badge was on the front.

I took a dislike to the Pug 306 and now the wife owns a Pug 407 which is a great improvement in refinement, build, and performance, despite us saying we didnt want another Pug, its odd how these things pan out.

Mazda, Peugot, Citroen, Vauxhall or Fiat

I own an A4 estate and think its an awesome car and will probably replace with the same. Have owned Ford, Vauxhall, Subaru, Peugot, VW, Nissan and Renault in the past and havent been so impressed as with my current car. (I previously heard Subaru dealers were excellent, I have owned three impreza's and while the cars are excellent the three dealers I have dealt with have been shit, I would unfortunately never buy a Subaru again due to after sales support (Nobles - Penicuik, Grieves Falkirk hold your held in shame, especially the sales person David at Grieves, what a useless, lying little c**t).

Interesting daveb.... same story on a number of threads about poor dealers.... They are car salespeople at the end of the day and we are all the most important people in the world for the short period of time leading to signing for a new car... after that, your nothing as your not buying from them and adding to their commission.

I wouldnt buy any Land or Range Rover, any 4x4 pickup and disregard anything French.... Will probably go with Skoda next... (who havnt had a bad word on this thread yet).....

Just thinking my car purchases are a continuation of what my parents had when I was a kid... vw/audi/skoda.....

I wouldn't have:

Anything from the VW Audi stable based upon experience (VW, Skoda, Audi, Seat)
Anything French based upon how many French cars I see on the hard shoulder
Fiat, based upon experience
Anything Korean cos they eat dogs and their cars say you have given up on life in general.
