What happened to the days of riding your bike and a factory team sponsoring you because you were good enough and won stuff ,lots of guys out there not paying 7k to getin a magazine.

It obviously still happens, I wonder if this had been brought over from the states?
Won’t be long before its a rich persons sport like F1.

Although I did think the whole SPS thing was about funding/supporting/developing young, promising riders, rather than adding a new top tear to the Audi-roof rack brigade, then again why wouldn’t you want to buy an advantage if you could?
Still He can’t be far from retirement now, you’ve got to monetise the brand somehow…

Reading between the lines I reckon Customers “Program members” would just be helping to make up a control group for some Sheffield Hallam Sport’s science paper…

I saw some of his dh syndicate race on the same deal. They were quick in their own right, just a different deal compared to what was on offer from shops etc.

Not bad VFM if it is £7k. You get a SC bike ( I’d guess it’ll be a Carbon mid/top range one) and coaching/support.

Yeah it’d be interesting to know exactly what you get, as you say a decent coach could be £80/month or so, so if you get a year of that, and a SC bike plus event support that isn’t bad. The cynic in me wonders if you have to give the bike back though?

I think a lot of people have missed the point here, out of everyone that applies Steve picks the guys or gals who he presumably knows he can train to the higest level. The entry fee covers the training, race support and the carbon bike which must be nearly that on its own. It’s not just a buy in for loaded IT specialists 😆

If I was serious about Enduro, was racing at a decent level and was thinking of my next bike (possibly in that price range) I’d consider it.

You and 900 other applicants apparently. They are going to be wittled down to around a dozen, so no slow coaches with deep pockets….

It happens in other sports, MX for example. It’s not for me as I’m to fat/slow/lazy/old* but I think these things are a good idea, there were several different brands doing it in DH last year. And just like MX it’s not going to stop all the privateers from racing.

A mate of mine was on the SPS a couple of years ago. It was an absolute bargain in my opinion.
The coaching at Sheffield Hallam, the help with all his race preparation, mental preparation. Advice on nutrition etc,etc.
There were also training days (and a couple of parties) with Steve Peat and Josh Bryceland.
Apart from the brand new Santa Cruz bike and a couple of sets of kit to race in, my mate also received kit throughout the year from various sponsors. They also gave him an xc bike at a very good price and kit to ride xc in too.
So although the upfront cost seemed a lot, the support throughout the year is something you’d never get if you were sponsored by a regular shop team or team without serious backing.
For my mates’ young boy getting to ride with Steve Peat and Bryceland and them call him on first name terms, is something that he will probably remember for the rest of his life.

He’s been doing this on the DH side for several years.
