Another in a (no doubt) long list of questions I’m gonna be asking….

I’m trying to spec. out a van conversion at the moment, probably using a Trafic/Vivaro. On the off chance I might want to actually sleep in it occasionally, what sort of insulation and/or ventilation should I be thinking of?

Sbmcc forum is a good place.
Ime condensation is the biggest problem. We solved it by lining with 6mm ply and the covering with cord carpet.
Kingspan board is the preferred insulation if you want to go down that route, but you lose cabin space.

in my pug expert i pulled the ply lining, filled the gaps with sheep’s wool insulation, and stuffed the lining back in place. seems to have worked a treat.

seriously – the only ‘wet’ it should experience is from condensation i guess. i’ve slept in the van a couple of times and have not found smell to be an issue. i’ve only had the van since august though, so will see how we go.
nice thing about using wool is it’s easy to deal with/handle.

Can you get foam similar to what they use for sleeping mats? Stick it to the metalwork with a strong damp and heat resistant adhesive. Marine stuff like Sikaflex would be best I reckon.

vwt4forum is full of info, insulation will be usefull generally.

I’m using the B&Q re-cycled bottle stuff into the cavities then foil bubble wrap stuff over that. Ply should be arriving next week (well hopefully Friday but you know, sod’s law and all that).

So the big yella tranporta will be toastie in a week or so.

Then it’s carpeting after the electrics are sorted.

I fitted out a trafic. Put glass wool insulation behind ply on sides and top. Then covered the ply board with carpet tiles as they are easy to work with and cut to shape.

I put a pop up roof vent in also but I wouldn’t bother if I was doing it again. didn’t give enough benefit and was an area of weakness. Some people put a computer fan in the side attached to 12v.

I have a vivaro and to insulate it i ply-lined the walls and filled all the space behind with loft insulation.
I found doing the roof made the biggest difference, ply-lined (using thiner ply) and again there is enough room between the ply & the van skin to use loft insulation.

I also covered the ply in a felt fabric from a specialist supplier. – I can get the email address if you want.
