In the angle between the wooden garage door frame and the stonework is “filler”. It looks like pointing but seems to be much softer.
Any idea what to use to replace it?

    Is it putty?

Was talking about putty with a painter & decorator the other day. Seems to me something of the past – although I always liked working with putty, very versatile

I don’t think so rkk01 it is a firmer material than putty but not as strong at the surrounding pointing.
    Any other ideas?

a mortar mix with less cement in it? or made with sharp rather than builder’s sand?

    What colour?
    What sort of texture?
How wide is the gap being filled?

If it’s been there a while, putty could have gone off fairly hard. Repairing wooden boats, we used to blend putty with all sorts – paint & putty commonly to make it stickier and more waterproof, but also oakum for caulking (and IIRC have heard of saw dust / grit). Have also removed putty and horsehair caulking from old planking…

If it dark coloured, bitumen and sand ???
Soft, light and sandy, might be a lime mortar??

A mortar mix? Well it does look and feel gritty but just not the same as the normal pointing. Would this “less cement, mortar mix” be ok as the garage door bashes against the door frame each time it closes, will it break up and fall out again?
Anybody thought about the silicone fillers or are they only for indoors?

an exterior mastic will provide a flexible fill.

Rake out, fill with expanding foam, cut back a little, apply a silicone/mastic joint, spray with washing up liquid mixture, use an angled bit of wood to form mastic into a nice fillet.

The wooden door frame fits very well between the stone block uprights, so very little in the way of gaps to fill.
Spray with washing-up liquid? Is this a trick of the trade? What does it do to the material you just used to fill the angle between the wood and stone?

It’s an easier form of spit!! Whenever you see plumbers etc tidying up a joint round a sink etc it’s always a quick lick of the finger and then wipe down the joint, this is fine for a little joint but when doing loads of windows say you get fed up of the taste of silicone 😀
All you need is a little spray bottle with a bit of fairy (or whatever you use) and water, spray on the silicone/mastic and it enables you to tool it without it sticking to anything. Some modern mastics skin quickly so make sure you’ve got everything ready before you apply. Hth
