I used to live on the plain until 2015…all very much local territory. A fascinating place! Used to love walking round the old Tilshead Manor grounds and long barrow.

As an aside my eldest son was an extra in the film 1917 (unnamed soldier) and I cycled through Maddington Down recently and saw a new ‘old’ cottage that was clearly used in the filming.

mikertroid – definitely a fascinating place! Didn’t know Tilshead Manor existed and have found Tilshead Lodge on a wonderful mapping website that was linked to on here recently:

So, looking at the map, it would basically have been near where the water tower and long barrow is situated? Do you know anything about the water tower?

@CG I think the place I referred to was the old site of Tilshead Lodge.

Water tower was part of an old Army camp IIRC. There are lots of hardstandings around there that must have had huts on etc.

Might have to venture up that way before too long (I’m now in the Nadder Valley).

Thanks @mikertroid and that would make sense as the land has obviously been managed there. Will see if I can load up a pic although the ones I saw weren’t good quality.

Nadder Valley is gorgeous, have explored some of the rights of way on the Fonthill estate.

Does anyone know how to put a Twitter thread into the Threadreader app please? The first part is in it and so much easier to read. Seems as though you need a Twitter account, which I don’t have, to do this?
