[Closed] Tubeless tyre fitting revelation?

Brought a wheel* into the office today to fit some new spokes.

When finished I realised I'd left my pop-bottle-inflator-jobby at home. After a few unsuccessful attempts with a track pump and a removed valve core I spotted an old 26in tube, wrapped that around the outside of the tyre to help seal it against the rim and it beaded straight away with much less faff than using an inflator...

Is this a trick I've previously missed or have I done an invention?

I do something similar with cable ties on my fatbike tyres, never needed it with normal tyres but I like it!

I've done something similar by simply wrapping my arms around the tyre, sort of hugging it, basically reduces the volume so when you start pumping air into the tyre it pushes the beads out quicker. (I think)

May just cut the valve off and run it like a budget semi-slick 😉

I think that's a genuine invention.

Of course you now need to sell your OuterTube (pat. pending) at say £30 a throw.

5% to me for the name

haha, thanks whitestone - glad to see I'm not the only person who hugs their tyres in place 😉

jamesfts - nice way of making the obsolete inner-tube feel wanted, just one last time !

Did initially thing of doing something similar but couldn't work out how to hug and pump at the same time (that sounds so wrong).

Logic behind it was to pull the bead in against the taped section of the rim to create enough of a seal to allow it to 'pop' onto the rim.

This is excellent.

'cept now I find myself wondering if I need a 650b tube for my 29er tyres.

I tried it using a strap, but failed miserably. The use of a tube as the perfect tool is inspired though, so good work.

There are some quite astounding videos online if you know the right search terms.

That's a great idea.

I suppose you could use other things rather than an inner tube (if you don't have one). For example those straps (ratchet or otherwise) that you use for securing loads (e.g. to a roof rack)

Where was you a couple of weeks ago!

Think it'll seat a Mary on a Hope rim?

Ratchet strap isn't ideal because it doesn't pull evenly, it tends to fold th tyre a bit and create caps. Cable ties work great because you can tighten them one at a time round the outside... I guess the tube would do soemthing like that too.

I've done similar on a very floppy tyres with clothes pegs. Reduced the volume and pulled the bead out by pegging the side wall. The all pinged off as the tyre went up though.

This was my first* thought as well.

Shouldn't. The tube is outside the tyre so is already running bigger than designed.
But test and find out.

Well you've just stuffed your chances of patenting it by telling us.

I've done that before with a big ratchet strap but that's far simpler

I've had success using a cam lock strap but this seems a much more apt solution 😀

Another ratchet strap user here, but only had to resort to this twice.
Liking the inner tube twist on things, though.

Good thinking Batman. Have done it a few times with Land Rover tyres during races using a ratchet strap. Same principle but this is a far better solution for bike tyres I can already see. LIKE

I still ended up having to pack the rim trough on my fat rims though. Jumbo Jim just wouldn't hold any kind of shape.

If I've ever had to seat really baggy tyres I've always used a daisy chain of Toe Straps.

Hightowers are shocking for this.

Just tried it and it certainly made the two i did easier - One tnt to tubeless rim one non tubeless to non tubeless
I would recommend it

Is that a valve stem or the tail pinned on your cunning plan so you can call it a weasel?

I take that back as it didn't work for my skinny XC tires when I tried it last night on a 2.1x29 Rocket Ron Evo!

Great tip, OP, but why did I give all my 26" tubes away?

There's a standard trick for bigger off-roaders involving using a load strap to do what you've done here, but I've never seen it done with an old inner tube.

Nice idea! I'll give it a try next time I need to get a tubeless tyre up easily and I'm away from the cave... 😀

Great idea!

Lost the presta adapter to the compressor but managed to get both jumbo Jims up with a smear of vaseline on fatty stripper rim tape with a track pump. Couldn't believe my luck but this was the next option.
