Zakarin would rather have a stage win despite killing his team today

Definitely no bonus for Quintana, back of the group. What a job by Dumoulin.

Fair one. Bit gutted VN didn’t take the stage, he looked a bit slow at the end though.

Only 15 seconds conceded by Tom today. He should be back in pink tomorrow.

Great ride by Pinot for the win too. And good work by Zakarin for kicking it all off.

Should be good tomorrow, TD has looked on empty at the end of the last two stages, so will see how he recovers for tomorrow

Dumoulin should be able to stick over a minute into Quintana, no problem (assuming he’s not ruined himself over the last couple of days). Nibali isn’t far enough ahead. I’d guess it’s Tom’s race to lose now in some respects.

Nibbles and Quintana would have been hoping for a lot more time today, neither of them seem to have the form to really bury TD. Think it might be the rising of a new generation. If Froome is in form then Tour going to be a snoozefest, Vuelta hopefully good as usual though.

    From cyclingnews…

The updated GC sees Nibali just 39 seconds behind Quintana while Pinot is now third at 43 seconds. Dumoulin is now 53 seconds back in fourth place.

On paper an easy win for Dumoulin but this is the last day of a GT so who knows who’ll have the legs! Fingers crossed for big Tom.

Will be interesting to see what Quintana does for the Tour. Not seen much to worry Froome. Did he come in undercooked building for the Tour thinking it would be more straightforward?

Conversely I think Nairo would be nowhere in GC without a strong Movistar team to protect him on pretty much everything other than the very steep bits.

So, off to …… next year

anyone care to take a punt on that ?

Someone’ll be upset – unless Nibs retires and he goes to BM (he may have too many morals for that though!)

Good finale today, and keeping some interest going into the TT tomorrow

I like Teebow Peeno, so glad he took the stage. TD should be able to get enough to win tomorrow.

I think TD will stay where he is, although Sky are said to be interested. Trek maybe, with Contador on the wane?

Makes tomorrow very interesting. Dream would be Dumloulin to win, Pinot 2nd and anyone but Nairo or Nibali 3rd, Zakarin maybe?

Don’t forget that team looks much weaker as they lost his best domestique to the motorbike.
But i agree, he wouldn’t have signed without some commitment on buying in some more support.

And there was me half expecting today’s stage to be boring… Best one yet, sitting on the edge of my seat for the last 20k or so, with everyone putting in a proper fight.

The TT looks made for Dumoulin, but it could be tight still. I reckon Nibali will give it a good go too.

Yeah you’d hope he’s going to get some proper worker ants.

His plight has reminded me of Cadel Evans, always battling away on his own, probably against dopers too…

    Well well.

Not a bad stage by any stretch of the imagination was it. Nibz and Quinty still lack that spark and tomorrow it’s theirs to loose, considering the time differences.
    However.
Tom has to put in a blinder of a TT.

Nice riding by Molema et all, Tom has some friends which he’ll repay as only the Dutch can do.

Got to thank Tom’s bowels for setting up a dramatic finish. If it wasn’t for that he’d probably be in pink now with a minute in hand. Incredible really that he’s thrown away so much time and will still likely win the Giro over Quintana and Nibali. Tenacious stuff.

I reckon Tom will be relishing today’s TT after day after day of stressful defending in the mountains. He’s looked fatigued at the end of 5 hour high mountain stages, but today’s 35 mins or so of effort won’t be a problem.

    theotherjonv
    Full Member

true, but the dynamic duo burnt a lot of matches out there creating the gaps too; neither had anything left for the bonus points.

It’ll be tactically interesting too….. with Tom D going out 4th last the others will know his splits but won’t have an ultimate time to aim for until they’re 80% finished as well, so does he go out fast to eat up their advantage early and put them under pressure, or do they ride an equal split hope adrenaline gets them home in the last 5-10km…

I may be beer in hand shouting at my TV later.

And despite the (IMHO) less than fair poo-ttack earlier, I hope it’s sorted by men on bikes rather than by mechanical problems.

Another point I think someone made is that Quintana will be in a stock pink skin suit whereas Dumoulin will be in his sunday best. I don’t think Quintana’s actually the threat, Nibali’s the better TTer so he’ll have potentially been glad to avoid riding in borrowed kit?

Yes that was me. Endura spent thousands on optimising everything about Quintana’s skin suit (special fabrics, placement, seams, etc.) so going to the Giro sponsors suit, despite it being made for him, will still cost him seconds.

Stage 21 Monza > Milan The Full Gas Shoot Out

The start of the ITT is set on the home straight of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza (already stage twon in 1949 and 1985). After completing one lap of the circuit, the stage course takes the pit lane and passes behind the paddocks to enter the Monza Park. The route then emerges from Villa Reale (first time split), then proceeds along wide, straight and well-paved avenues. In Sesto San Giovanni, the route takes the railway underpass. The second time split is taken upon entering Viale Italia. From here on, the course runs almost straight up to 2 km from the finish in Piazza Duomo. As far as Milan is concerned, it counts 8 stages with start and finish, 47 starts and 77 arrivals (last arrival in 2015). In the stage finale, the route first runs on wide avenues, and then on narrowed roads over the last few hundred metres, with several consecutive 90-degree turns over the last 100 – 150 metres, before entering Piazza Duomo. The home straight (150 m) is on 6-m wide stone-paved road.
