Teachers striking again!!!!!
-
akysurfFree Member
Here’s a thought (after a moment of calibration). The school fete is tomorrow, and THANKS to the teachers (extra-curricular) efforts it’s going ahead – lets not forget that!
So I will very much look forward to fielding a wet sponge or two for charity

Exactly where have I slagged off teachers?
Well if you want to get all pedantic with me I could similarly ask you exactly where have I said you slagged off teachers ? …… I merely suggested that your wife being a nurse gave you the right to slag off teachers.
But putting such silliness to one side and playing by your rules, you very early in the thread questioned “the teachers’ commitment to teach” ……otherwise why would you even have mentioned it ? And questioning the teachers’ commitment to teach, very much constitutes ‘slagging off teachers’ in my book.
Furthermore the title to this thread is extremely misleading. Anyone reading Teachers striking again!!!!! with no less than FIVE exclamation marks, could be forgiven for thinking that teachers had only recently been on strike – maybe last month ? And yet out of the two teaching unions which have voted for strike action, one hasn’t had a national strike for 3 years and the other hasn’t had one in 127 years.
The purpose of the wholly misleading thread title is clear, it is to portray teachers in a critical and negative way. And the purpose of posting the thread itself is also clear – to invite others to be critical and negative about teachers.
Hope that helps.
akysurfFree Member[maybe !!!!! on a plackard will grab the same level of attension?
recently been on strike
3 year okay that’s not so bad, suppose…hmmmm?
When was he last time you heard of an ‘analytical chemist’ (for example) striking? or a policeman, or a nurse….as I say “we can” therefore “we will” is the take home.
akysurfFree MemberAnyone reading Teachers striking again!!!!! with no less than FIVE exclamation marks, could be forgiven for thinking that teachers had only recently been on strike
In retropect pehaps “Teachers striking again????? as it’s been nearly 3 years!!!!!” would have been more appropriate?

Not that you’re ‘slagging off’ teachers……..perish the thought.

And yet out of the two teaching unions which have voted for strike action, one hasn’t had a national strike for 3 years and the other hasn’t had one in 127 years. (Why? The word again alludes to a previous action without reference to time, how you interprete the language is your problem.)

Impressive ernie. Back on form me ol’ mucker…
Keep venting akysurf.I’m 39 when I went through the school system it was going through what I would describe as it’s new age/hippy stage. Very little atention or time was given to spelling and grammer it was all about expressing your self. You weren’t marked down for spelling or grammer and correct me if i’m wrong but isn’t this something the school system has now realised was a big mistake? The 3 r’s are now a lot more important due to the poor core educational skills of the nation. Hard to be good at something your not taught properly isn’t it? Of course it’s not all the teachers fault your only following government guide lines but it’s hardly all my fault is it?
I was never taught grammar either, I can remember my sister coming home with homework about the present perfect, I never had such homework. I’m about five years older than you so aound the same era. I also learnt to rean phonetically using the ITA system. I don’t, however, feel that anything was lacking in my education and I currently teach English and ocassioanlly feel obliged to correct people’s spelling or grammar on here when I’m bored. I don’t think we can blame the teachers for the methodology the state obliged them to use. We can blame the lazy feckers for not implementing the system well.
What I also see here is a particularly selfish attitude on the side of the teachers, here we are in the middle of a global financial crisis, where people are suffering across the globe, 250,000 house repossessions in Spain during this year is one figured being spoken about (sorry no data ernie), and the teachers are complaining that their net income is going to be reduced so they can maintain their pensions. Neither and intelligent or sensitive move in my book. Also what I’ve seen on here is a particularly poor attitude by some of the teachers on here by way of defending their attitude, and a particularly poor level of English too. I am left asking the question as to whether I would want to put these people in charge of my children’s education.
It might just be that the govt has a different agenda, and that the tories want to move away from the state funding education towards a more private sector based education system, but hey, it’s the govt you’ve got, you had the opportunity to vote and vote for a different govt, we come back to taking responsibility for your actions. 😉
(where did all that come from so early on a Saturday?)MikeypiesFree Memberyou are hardly in a position to slag off teachers for poor english Don
donsimonFree Memberyou are hardly in a position to slag off teachers for poor english Don
Why?
donsimonFree MemberCan’t be arsed, it’s long winded and full of shite, you’ll have to cut and paste it for me.
anagallis_arvensisFull Memberbiggest barriers to progress in learning are linked to factors at home,
Yawn
If you cannot see this or understand it then it is you my friend who is living in a bubble and that bubble is an socio-economic one.
Simple fatc is that teachers are striking because they can and because their strikes have a real impact. The teachers cannot be easily replaced and closing the schools will not happen.
You suggested closing the schools and home educating, I as a teacher would make a fortune if the state system was closed. However just like I will not go and work in a private school so that I dont have to help those poor young scallies learn I also dont want to see the state system undermined and the cuts in jobs with associated increases in class size, combined with some teachers leaving the state system to get better pay as there renumeration is eroded will see those kids suffer.
duckmanFull Member250,000 house repossessions in Spain during this year is one figured being spoken about (sorry no data ernie),
Is that not normal, bearing in mind Spain’s obsession with making house ownership as difficult as possible. “Sorry senor, you bought your house on a saints day, that means the government can repossess it as long as they write the notice in blue ink.”
akysurfFree MemberYou said it…
Simple fatc is that teachers are striking because they can
NorthwindFull MemberI’ve got about 40 seconds into that video and everything in it is total pish.
LiferFree MemberWow what a balanced view. Have you seen the rest of the rubbish on that site?

Are you having a laugh? You do realise it’s a US video and nothing at all to do with the UK union? Now that’s changing the subject.

JunkyardFree Memberthat is ridiculous beyond words – and the first two comments were actually factually incorrect – mainly because it related to America not here- the accents may have been a clue for you.
it is better to garner facts then form an opinion rather than form an opinion then search for supporting facts. It ruins your perspective to the point you post things like that to support your view.
Similar issues accross the pond
these were the only two facts I got
1. teachers cannot be sacked yes they can HERE when they are crap
2. Unfair to observe -All teachers are observed both externally [OFSTED] and internally.the main reason we dont do comparison between teacher so the point i made before about intelligence being inherited and if you work with less able pupils you will get worse results than if you work with more able pupils. There is no way to control this and come up with a fair and objective measure of performance given they all work with different “materials”.
onehundredthidiotFull MemberDamn it i’m in the ATL and the strike day is the last day of term. Mind you Scottish teachers ain’t striking.
OxboyFree MemberA teacher friend of mine said he was striking, I asked him several questions regarding his pension and the changes that have been proposed which he couldn’t answer.
I’ts just another excuse for yet another day off.
I really don’t think they know how well off they are, I’m quite jealous of them really!NorthwindFull Memberakysurf – Member

Okay lets ignore the first two comments then..

…so your saying I have no entitlement to form an opinion
JunkyardFree Memberjealousy would seem to be the main reason for dislking their pension deal, how very honest of you
akysurfFree Memberjealousy
I work for a private firm and I am very happy with my current pension arrangement.

It’s a video made by right wing nutjobs designed to make the ‘liberal’ point of view as absurd as possible. The most transparent propaganda, providing both sides of the debate. Watch the Gay Marriage one or the Gun Control one, you’d have to be completely credulous to take anything from these videos except that the creators are idiots.
And this is from the same people:
A Hitler Bunker parody! Democrats = Nazis!
Freakin idiots.
JunkyardFree MemberOkay lets ignore the first two comments then..
Ok I will just ignore the wrong bits in it and see if it right.

You have failed to comprehend a fairly simple sentence and have reached a false conclusion. No I am not saying that.

I my job no two collegues have the same materials or objectives, but we are all measured on our performance and rewarded accordingly.
JunkyardFree MemberI explained why you could not do this for teaching…I did not say you could not do it for your job.
TBH I would be surprised if you could get through unless it was to teach freanch obviously 😉 if we ever teach ranting though I am sure you will be on too a winnerakysurfFree MemberI explained why you could not do this for teaching…I did not say you could not do it for your job.

Median salary in UK is £499/wk or £26k/y.
The National Statistics figures above are not London weighted. So we can assume that outside London the figure is lower.
Essentially, the typical teacher earns an above average salary. Teachers are in the top half of all wage earners in the UK. And they have a Govt guaranteed defined benefit pension scheme. If they are complaining about pay or conditions, they need to think again.
There is no sympathy for greedy teachers. Even in the Unions in question.

Yes, yes it is.

So a person with a degree and diploma earning around the average wage is greedy. These are highly qualified people. The average wage includes all the folk with no qualifications. Teachers work long hours in conditions that are often very stressful – do you know any?
what planet are you on?
