What are other people using on their S/S 29ers?

32:18 for general use – Mendips, Quantocks.

follow the words of wisdom of my favorite beardy SS racers Fuzzy and dejay and use a 33-18 to 33-21 with a rotor ring depending on the course.

Or a Neddy Overend and use a 34 rotor ring with a 21 rear.

32:18 on Mt Malvern. Although sometimes I wish it was 18:32

32:19 in scotchland, 32:17 in england (MASSIVE GENERALISATION ALERT)

will be 32:20 in the alps.

Interesting! I rode 25miles today over rock, bridals and some tarmac using only the same gear on my 27 gear Scandal! 32 middle at the front and the forth one up at the rear, 17 I think? It felt OKish and maybe an eighteen could be right! A 19 sprocket which I have purchased could be too easy?

32:18 on a 29er is the same as a 32:16 on a 26er so I guess these are the standards but it depends on what sort of peddler you are……

32:18 in the summer/dry, 32:20 in the winter/slop, much better for the old knees

Might be a stuipd question but how do you use a rotor ring on a ss, i am assuming you need a sprung rear tensioner?

ssboggy – works fine with a pukka ss, none of this tensioner cack. You set the tension the cranks at a 4-5 O’clock position which puts the highest tension on the chain, the slighter slacker spot on chainring doesn’t cause any issues. I’ve had the chain skip off once and that was due to a sliding drop out/chaintug issue. 😀

Been experimenting with ratios using what I already had and what came with second hand wheels and cranks I’ve bought.

34×20, 3.7m felt a bit low.
32×18, 3.8m also felt a bit low.
34×18, 4.1m was definitely too high.

I’ve gone back to 32×18 for now. It’s a bit spinny at times, but I’m doing longer rides now the weather’s warmer, so I can put up with that if it makes the climbs easier.
I’ll stick with it until the sprockets wear out, then I’ll probably give 34×19, 3.9m a go.

It’s a lot easier to understand ratios when everything is converted to a single number.
The Metres Development is only to one decimal place, or 100mm though.
The Gear Inches is more accurate, at .1″ or 2.54mm, so better for calculating slight differences.

32:19 gets me up pretty much anything ’round my part of the Chilterns (except that flippin Stonor climb). Spinny on the flat bits though…good job there’s aren’t many of those 🙂

32:18 around Cannock Chase (not the Monkey/FtD bit). Think it was in 32:20 when I did the Monkey Trail on it, & it felt ok but stupidlt spinny elsewhere. I was running two at the rear & swapped to suit. Just put a dedicated ss rear wheel on so now its stuck at 32:18.

32:20 South Downs area Brighton.Seems to be good but does spin oout on the flat….I like my knees though :oD

32:19 in the South Pennines, 36:20 on the Pugsley

34-19 here most of the time

32:18 on the borrowed TD-1 was fine for 12 hours at Hit The North and for 100 miles at Kielder.
