I'm assuming '08 is modern?

Would we class the last of the straight top tubes ('06) as the first to be 'older'

I'd try for no older than '06 ( I think?) last model year with square front to the swing arm and still has straight top tube.

Same basic geomerty as current Fives, with 5.5inch rear travel and you can fit pikes etc. Old ones have differing geometry and I think 120 is max fork travel.

Keeping it real since 04 🙂 Only original bits are the frame and rims tho...

Mine has 5.1" rear travel and supposedly 125mm max front, although it came with 130 talas and the pikes are fine for it. Now has 150 revs, which are too long for steep climbs but fine for everything else.

Re above, I think the 06 has the curved front swingarm but the 05 also had 5.5" rear? You can google for the old Orange pages. Saw an 04 like mine go for £250 on here, seriously considered buying it as a spare. But yes, manitou swinger is a bit of a rubbish shock compared to current ones.

Old sub5 - tough as nails and a great all round bike: 7 years of hard commuting, instructing and trails.

I can't decide whether I'd need an 18" or 20" @ 6ft 2 (though again I ride an 18" inbred), but might be worth also looking out for C'dale Prophets, as you might get one cheapish. As an alternative to the older 5 (which again I always thought looked superior to the new one).

Oh go on, if I must...

18" '06. Frame bought off here in utterly immaculate condition for £400 last year having been bought new by the previous owner from a shop in Feb 2009.
