Got Daughters graduation in sheffield and want to tie it in with a nice meal afterwards, can anyone recommend any where really nice, would prefer italian but open to suggestions im not after cheap and plentiful, we want good quality food and surroundings, thanks in advance
Rafters.
If you're in the city centre, Vero Gusto on Norfolk Row is excellent.
Rafters +1. Or Joro (definitely not Italian but has a great rep).
A few years ago I would have recommended The Milestone as well, but the last two times I've been there I've left disappointed. [EDIT: and I see I'm not the only one, it's closed and up for sale]
Balti King (I'm joking, I'm joking...)
Balti King (I’m joking, I’m joking…)
I've just made myself LOL remembering how basic their poppadom accoutrements were. Bowl of diced onions sir?
Every dish they served was exactly the same, just a slightly different colour.
Across the road from, well, just down the hill and across the road from Rafters (which is great) Is Gigi’s, a rather nice Italian.
2nd for vero gusto if you're in the centre for the graduation
No name n Crookes is THE best in our experience, rafters was good but not a patch on the cooking of Tom Samworth, he's phenomenal.
Only small and books up quick, also a bonus is it's byo!
Balti King (I’m joking, I’m joking…)
Website says ‘Having served up aromatic meals for almost 20 years, it is clear to see why the Balti King is considered royalty!’. I think they need to update their website, I’m sure it existed in the early 90’s.
Then there’s Jung Ying if you’re short on time or cash.
Rafters, Joro or Vero Gusto by far the best options in my opinion.

It did, definitely open in 1993 when I went to university.
+1 for Joro.
If you wanted a curry (and not Balti King), Ashoka on Eccy Road is very good. As is Maazi in Hathersage (I know, not in Sheffield but not a long drive).
Isabellas in Kelham Island is good and reasonably priced. Lemon cheesecake is first class
A plug for Tonco. My son has just got a job as a chef there. He was really pleased to get the job as it's the progression he wanted. He wouldn't bother with the job if the food wasn't amazing. Lots of seasonality locally sourced stuff etc.
Nonna's worth a visit if you are after Italian. Others mentioned are all good options too
Vero Gusto is Italian and in the City Centre, all the others are not, if that’s a consideration
Domo in kelham island is excellent. Sicilian I think?
When we were down for the wee ones skating we ended up at Rossi's, will be going back.
Thanks guys, looking like Verogusto as it’s central, we are coming over from Huddersfield so either central or on the way back to Huddersfield
Maranello's on Eccleshall Road?
Long time since I've been there but liked it.
For Italian I would definitely agree with Domo and Vero Gusto. I'd be looking at booking ASAP for both, as they are very popular.
JORO is the best restaurant in Sheffield at the mo, slightly pipping Rafters. Again though, if its short notice you may struggle to get in either.
Tonco
The bread!!
We went there on a weekend visit to Sheffield recently. Oh my word, their bread is incredible.
(The rest of the food wasn't bad either).
You can’t go wrong with vero gusto if you want city centre Italian. Definitely the best option.
We had my daughter’s grad this week in Newcastle and she chose the place- pleased to meet you- very nice food but massively understaffed and slow service. Loads of graduation families on a Monday night threw them I think. Got free cocktails as a result though!
Back to Sheffield…
Tonco is great. My son worked there just before lockdown as a KP. The staff running it are super friendly and it’s a really pleasant place to visit.
At the start of lockdown they gave him a food parcel of veggies cheese and bread that were going to go to waste- such a nice gesture.
He also worked at rafters for a bit doing table service. Hated it. Food great of course but he disliked having to do homework to learn the menu presentation for minimum wage! We have had some very nice special occasion meals there over the years.
Joro is great but you’ll need to book a long way in advance. Went for my 50th. Pretty special.
I’ve only had lockdown takeout from noname but they were really good. Wife has been and says it’s very good.
Another option no one has mentioned is the Sardinian on sharrowvale-akentannos. The octopus!
If you wanted a curry (and not Balti King), Ashoka on Eccy Road is very good.
Cheers @tuboflard, seconded!
Especially now Balti King has apparently closed down @squirrelking!
Went to Tonco too recently and was very impressed. Their bread was good but their olive oil, oh my god. Next level (if that’s something you can describe olive oil as).
Tonco never disappoints
No current suggestions but this set me off on a nostalgia trip and I'm gobsmacked to see Uncle Sam's still exists and gets great reviews. It's almost 50 years since I was there.
Tonco for the win. I can say that with confidence having had 3 great meals there and no longer being related to the staff
