Shinglespeed we do get sent to help pick old people up ive been sent out countless time to assist the ambulance crews. Ive also been sent out instead of ambulance crews

Id be careful what you wish for as i noted above the govt is wanting to pump money into brigades to take the heat and jobs from the ambulance crews. Now that money is only gonna come from the ambulance budget which means further cuts for you

Some brigades already have red ambulances and ours wants some.

Firestarter,,, I don’t feel threatened by the inclusion of extra resources. Quite the opposite I welcome it.

Anything to assist me with my job has to be a good thing.

At the end of the day a firefighter making a first response, is just that ..a first aider.

I’ve studied for three years at university and and have a Masters degree in medicine as have the vast majority of my medical colleagues these days.

I think paramedics and fire and rescue are the same service in some countries ? New York springs to mind (and yes pedants I know it isn’t a country but that doesn’t invalidate my entire point so keep out please)

Yes but they stick to those specialist roles. They even have separate ladder & hose trained companies.

No way can you maintain the skill set to be a competent paramedic & firefighter with firefighting, rtc, water rescue, working at height, haz mats, mass decontamination etc.

Regarding fires being more/less risky, it’s definitely more.
Energy saving measures & modern construction makes for compartment fires that are well insulated leading to backdraughts & flashovers together with the far higher fire loading of plastics, laminates etc we now fill our homes with.

Don’t firecrews in the US double up as paramedics as well? How is that working out for them?

EDIT: I see this has already been discussed.

Regarding cooking on duty, Its already proven that shift work is crap for your health. Surviving 14hrs on a microwave pasty ain’t gonna improve that situation. Take a look at the state of most paramedics! 😉
Yes we cook meals. We get a dinner break but it isn’t like we can leave the station & go read the bike mags in WH Smith. If the bells go, we go. Cooker off & out the door wheels rolling in under 45secs. You can’t even have a shit without prepping the paper for a fast wipe.

Well, I think everyone should have a job where they’re harassed, over-stretched and under-resourced. Preferably they’ll be low paid and with a miserable pension payable only when they’ve reached an age where they’ve little prospect of enjoying their retirement in reasonable health. If they can be demonised (purely by coincidence you understand) by the press whenever it suits the powers-that-be to further attack their Ts&Cs that’d be good too.

    It’s only fair.
